Strip searches rolled back in ACT Corrective Services?

The Canberra Times has an interesting piece on the state of our remand and detention centres (with a prison soon to come).

It would appear that following the December 2007 passage of the Corrections Management Act (ACT) officers are uncertain of which situations warrant the use of strip searches. An anonymous source to the CT reckons this means there are now almost no searches thus occurring.

The result could be an increase in weapons and drugs on the inside.

Simon Corbell denies there’s any problem.

So who to believe?

UPDATE: Simon has now announced that he’s passed new laws to fix the non-problem.

A man who legally murders the crippled, the blind and the mentally handicapped. What a hero.

Maybe we should take a leaf out of Joe Arpaio’s book. He is the Maricopa County Sheriff in Arizona and he keeps getting elected again and again. Look him up on Google.

Strip searches??? Huh! Crooks in Canberra going to his jail would never go back……oh how I wish it was here!!!

Hehe. In more ways than one!

Empirical data can include data gleaned from direct experience from the frontline rather than the usual spin from a politician. Too often journos ask the pollies when they could be going direct to the source.

Half the time pollies don’t really know what is going on at the micro level in their own portfolios – it would probably be impossible to some extent. It means there is a lot of unethical stuff being got away with and nowhere for the staff to turn without fear of the repercussions of whistleblowing.

Perhaps it is different with State/Territory governments.

Although when Mike Crowther talks about the ins and outs of correctional facilities he is way in front of anyone else on knowledge and experience. On that Mike – what’s your opinion on the new facilities for both adults and juvenile offenders?

Um, is it Tom Tom or Jon Jon?

for the record when mike crowther makes political commentary on simon corbell, or any one else for that matter, it should be taken with a grain of salt; seeing as how mike is a community alliance party candidate and after corbells job and all.

An X ray machine! What a brilliant idea…..that will never be out of service waiting for a part to arrive from Norway.

A lot of things can happen in a couple of weeks.

It was an odd article.

I think they had planned to ban strip searches in favour of an x-ray machine. But they didn’t get permission to use teh x-ray machine, so they are stuck with nothing for a few weeks while Simon madly pushes through the law we used to have, which allowed strip searches.

The CT article was a bit of a puzzler.

After about 12 column inches of describing/decrying the move to limiting strip searches, the last sentence has Sime ‘pushing laws through the Assembly last week, allowing strip searches to resume’.

What on earth was the beat up all about?

Dirty Harry wouldn’t have stood for that kind of bullsh*&%#

On the topic of Simon vg, as a person who (I suspect) is ‘close’ to the police, what is your take on the minister’s taking a group of ALP candidates with him on a pre-election ‘visit a police station and get your picture taken with a uniformed officer’ stunt recently?

what a great chance to get em all locked up. damn it!

Simon wouldn’t have a clue, you can quote me on it.

Strip searches of all remandees should be mandatory, that is the only ‘reasonable’ part of the whole argument

Who to believe….an anonymous source who is risking their job by speaking to the press, or a minister who is risking his job if the public doesn’t buy the denial.

Sorry, but it’s quacking like a duck I’m afraid.

oops. make that empirical data. damn strapped dislocated fingers

As a long time public servant I recommend always believe the anonymous source.

It is the people who are on the job that should be asked these questions never the pollies.

As a long time public servant I prefer to put my faith in emperical data personally.

A denial from Simon Corbell… we can all breath easier now. Phew!
