Andrew Barr has announced that the Stromlo Forest Park is also going to host a swimming pool:

The Gallagher Government is delivering on its election commitment to provide a new 50-metre indoor swimming pool in the Weston Creek/Molonglo area.

The Government is today announcing that land adjacent to Stromlo Forest Park has been chosen as the preferred site for the new Weston Creek/Molonglo swimming pool.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but is Molonglo not extremely close to Weston Creek? Are you suggesting the Government should build a pool for both Weston Creek and Molonglo?

I’d suggest that building a pool at Stromlo seems like a geographically smart location.

This pool won’t be completed until mid way through the next term of government. So what are these swimming clubs to do in the mean time. This pool will not fix the needs in Woden and inner south. Something that Mr Barr refuses to acknowledge.

There’s no doubt that sometime in the future Molonglo will need a pool but not for another ten years or until the Molonglo group centre is built which is going to be as big as the Gungahlin shopping precinct . You could spend $15mill on a 30m pool for Weston Creek and $20mill on upgrading Phillip to an enclosed pool.

Have a cry!!! So now it is ok for the pool to be “shared” with the inner south, but not with Molonglo?? If you have a look at where the development in the ACT is planned for the future years, the geographical centre of Canberra will shift north west a touch toward Belconnen as Molonglo is realised in its entirity.
Woden is more Weston Creek than Inner South. You could just not get any pool. Seems like you really will just complain so your little group feels relevant.

For those with a keen eye, this project was made known to the public.

Recently a Development Application was released for public comment for a realignment of Uriarra Road. It looked like the plan for Uriarra Road was to continue straight ahead to John Gorton Drive. From there an access road to a pool was to come off the new section of Uriarra Road.

I hope they put in more loud speakers to wake me up at half seven every sat and Sunday morning that would be tip top

It would be good to work in a new ice rink as well. The current one in Phillip surprises me that it is still allowed to operate.

Can we please combine the pool and MTB facilities, so we can have a bike jump into the pool!?!

An extra pool is an extra pool. Plus this one will be covered unlike the Phillip one. I don’t see why people are yet again whinging.

$33m sounds fair to me. Bring it on!

$33 Million, is it gold plated?

If you take a look at a map, Phillip pool is closer to the centre of Weston Creek than Stromlo Forest park is.

Stromlo Park was always going to get a pool for kiddie Triathlon. Perfect safe zone to do it and attract kids and their parents nationally. There’s money to be made.

Given the regular closure of LBG, it might end up being a constant substitute venue for adult triathlons too. I’ve done a few ‘final fling’ tris using an indoor pool. Usually the swim leg is after the bike to reduce swimming traffic jams.

Well Andrew Barr gets his way but not listening to the local community and building a new enclosed pool in his preferred location Stromlo Forrest park. There is not doubt that weston creek needs a pool but this pool will not be built in weston creek but Molonglo.
In 2008 Andrew Barr gave away the ACT Government owned Phillip pool to the sites tenant Glencora Pty LTD and signed a 99 year lease.
Deakin Pool closed in 2009 and was supposed to be replaced by two 25m pools but only one 25m ,and two smaller pools were built. This is a learn to swim pool only and requires membership to swim and is not a public pool.
Currebtly Woden Swim Club shares the pool at Tuggeranong with the Vikings swim club. Telopea swim club trains at Phillip in summer and uses Canberra Grammar pool. Lake Burly Griffin club also uses Canberra Grammar.
Weston could have had a multi -purpose facility with Erindale size pool built near the tennis courts on the Weston creek oval.
Residents in the south dupped again by this so called local MLA.
