A 35-year-old male has sustained serious injuries in a 20 meter fall while riding his mountain bike in the Stromlo Forrest.

The ACT Ambulance Service utalised a specialised 4-wheel-drive Ambulance to retrieve and treat the patient, who sustained injuries to his face, back and head.

The ACT Ambulance Service will shortly depart the scene and transport the patient to the Canberra Hospital. The patient is being transported in a stable condition.

Freud would have a field day…

I’m just waiting for the first impaling of a bike rider because he missed a hairpin corner, flew over the edge, and found several jagged outcrop of rocks.

Corners are pretty hard to miss. Rocks do not impale, particularly those at Stromlo. The tear-resistant nature of Kevlar is of little use in MTB’ing collisions.

Of course there’s an element of risk – and that can add to the thrill. However riders are not your imagined suicidal manaics: They have no desire to injure themselves enough to stop them from getting straight back on the bike!

Beyond the basic cuts and bruises, broken bones – particularly collarbones – are a fairly common injury in bike riding of all kinds. Riders do not need to “fly over the edge” to break a bone. A simple wheel wash-out in an otherwise flat, open area can be sufficient to have a body hit the ground hard enough to break something. Just like tripping over while jogging, etc.

The only trails that are likely to see a rider seriously “flying” are Downhill trails. People riding those trails usually wear padded body armour with hard outer shells. Rarely is kevlar used in any of it, though.

I don’t believe there’s anywhere at Mt Stromlo to fall 20 foot vertically, let alone 20m – but there’s plenty of rough fire trails that would be best served by a 4wd ambulance instead of the usual van.

Anyway, I do hope the rider recovers OK

Ack! Don’t leave us hanging! Gory details please.

whoops! big thumbs up not bi…

Never believe everything you read in a PR…..
Suffice to say a bi thumbs up to ACT Ambulance – boldy going where no normal ambulance should go and the staff @ Cbr Hospital.

For what its worth though- please wear a helmet people. Not a ‘grow into it’ helmet or second hand or an icecream container but a real, approved helmet. Heads can’t be replace, helmets can.
*rant over*

*portraying intimate knowledge of SFP trails*

Forget that.

Might be time to consider investing in Kevlar vests…

*carefully insert comment portraying intimate knowledge of SFP trails to gain karma*
Hope the chap gets well. Proper equipment is often overlooked for flash rigs and lycra up there

20m? No freaking way. That’s 5-6 stories high! Even falling 20m down a steep slope out there would be exceedingly difficult.

The release mentions ‘Stromlo Forrest’ (sic) and not Stromlo Forest Park

Given they can’t even utalise spell cheque I think your giving them two much credit. 😉

I hope the rider will be okay.

Good one LOL.
Having once wasted an afternoon at work searching for a non-existent file due to a wrong but legitimate looking typo I do think there are circumstances where a reasonable command of the language should be expected.

Sounds close enough?

And yeah, I hope the guy is able to fully recover.

I’m trying think where a 20 metre fall is at Stromlo, unless we’re talking shallow parabolic curves on the black descent.

Hope he hasn’t done anything permanent. Get well soon.

Couple of spots on Skyline drop off a fair bit. There is also Rollercoaster off the top, it winds aorund the pointy bit at the northen end of the ridge.

There is a bit of a drop into Deep Cree but I am not sure it is that much of a drop.

None of these are sheer cliffs though, just steep bits.

Probably came from the same person who sent the SMS out during the Mitchell fire.

“The ACT Fire Brigade responding to chemical insadent (sic) in Mitchell. Resadents (sic) of Franklin, Crace, Harrison, Kaleen, Lyeham, Hackett stay indoors.”

ESA really needs to send these people on spelling courses…..

What were 20 meters (gas? electericity?) doing on a mountain bike trail?

Utalised? Honestly.

All the best to our injured rider though. Sounds like it would have been painful.
