Stromlo upgrades - Is that fast enough for you?

Andrew Barr is showing off $1.5 million in improvements to the hilariously named Stromlo Forest Park (the once and future forest).

Apparently the adrenalin junkies weren’t getting enough of a buzz off the downhill course so it’s been made steeper and bumpier.

“The changes mean riders will approach speeds of up to 65 kilometres an hour, creating a more thrilling spectacle for the large crowds which will converge on Stromlo during September. More space has also been provided on the side of the track for the spectators to be trackside.”

Local elite downhill rider Ben Corey commended the changes: “The new track is faster, there’s more energy and we have turned a peddaly section into a fun one and it definitely makes it more spectator friendly as well,” he said.

This is all in anticipation of the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.

Well, after last year’s comments from the riders at the world cup round… ‘boring’ ‘slow’ ‘short’ ‘where are we?’ …hopefully it will provide some more excitement for international viewers and competitors alike.

I think it’s kind of cool!

$1.5 million spent on Stromlo trails (this year alone), yet they want to put roads straight through the middle of Majura Pines and Sparrow Hill – both of which cost them virtually nothing? *Sigh*

65km/h? Pfft! I’d say that’s an underestimation. Hopefully they’ve succeeded in revamping the boring bit near the bottom.

What a shame nobody could convince Barr-Bah to hop on a DH bike and test it out for a bit of a photo op!
