Suburban car collectors

I live in a heritage area that requires mind numbing amounts of paperwork to seek approval to remove a tree or change the look of a house.

However if I were to collect 52 unregistered cars, trucks, trailers, caravans, engine blocks, and sprinkle some household appliances among them? Well that’s just fine.

(Collect = distribute them around the front yard, street scape, neighbours yards and park them on the road when a good reshuffle is in order.)

Is crappy car collecting a socially acceptable secret I’m not in on?

UPDATE: Thanks to “Solidarity” for sending in this cracker from Wanniassa:

That’s a good one, thanks for the link.

You either don’t live next to a rusting car cemetery, or you live in a rusting car cemetery.

As it appears that the cars are parked within the lease of the property, this is NOT an issue for City Rangers.

This is a matter to take up with ACTPLA.

Google street view is live. The cameras are hidden in the cats eye reflectors on the road.

Why did you forget where you parked?

Higher res too I think.

Thanks,

Thank you for bringing nearmap to my attention. Never heard of it, but it is certainly streets ahead of Google Earth for definition. Suspect GE have been reducing definition since commencing public availability.

And it has a map date attached to it.

Reminds me of a story (not sure if true) that local authorities use Google Earth to audit streets looking for unapproved construction.

Given that the ACT government does from time to time follow up on stuff posted on Riotact it will be interesting to see if anything comes of this…

Every few years – you can see how old the imagery is using the ‘history’ option.

Solidarity, you forgot about the alsatian that hurls itself at the fence when you walk past.
And how many BMW’s of varying states of decay does one reasonably need to own?

No2 son deposited a BMW on the nature strip about 4 years ago. Whilst overseas, used to check Google Earth to make sure it was still there.

It still is, but threats have been made.

Being an Alfa no one would really expect it to be in operational condition.

I wonder if he has considered agisting those cars in his neighbours paddock, so limit the over grazing?

The Wanniassa one is a mechanic/engineer. A very good one.

Where did he get the park benches?

Probably revolve or something like it.

My comment was relating to the Wanniassa pic.

That pool almost looks skateable. I am sure someone will check it out seeing as it is school holidays.

Unlike many collectors of fine scrap metal, at least most of it is hidden behind a hedge.

Dad: Steve, could you move the Camira, I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore.

Steve: I’ll have to get the keys to the Cortina if I’m gonna move that Camira

A gypsy curse on ya all, that your streets for ever more will appear cluttered and dirty with cars. That ya house hold appliances will always break. That ya neighbour will forever more be a snobbish anal retard. Now give me ya keys or I slash ya.

HA!

Gypsy! Give me your tears! If you will not give them to me, I will take them from you!

Every area – even heritage listed ones – have their carnys.
It is safer to embrace them – rather than waste your time wishing they were neater.

A guy in Charterisville Ave, Conder has 3 bins (2 are yellow recycle bins), yet he has a trailer full of bottles, tins and other recycle bin material parked next door on public green space, plus a dead washing machine.

He’s just banking on the ACT introducing a container deposit scheme, before driving his trailer down to a collection depot and cashing it all in. Ka-ching!

Bowling, Shane, bowling.

I sure you would fine that there a lot of unregistered cars around government housing, I know of at least three that are parked in lower ground parking, they have been there for at least 4 years.

No, they’re just slovenly, no-hopers who don’t give a toss about their neighbours. My other beef is people who constantly park on the footpath (often when they’re driveway is empty!!)and force you to walk on the road. Anyone else find that annoying?

I just had a look at google streetview, and the house I used to live near no longer has car bodies, white goods, building materials etc. in the yard. The old guy who lived there must have died.

georgesgenitals4:15 pm 07 Jul 10

I remember growing up how the guy who lived around the corner from us would do his yearly Mowing Of The Lawn and find a couple of kingswoods.

Any decent old ones in there? Like 70’s old? Seriously.

There is a house of Ebden St in Ainslie (numbers withheld) that has gone one better. They have made a wall out of piles of ‘rendered’ used tyres.

That represents an enormous fire risk and should be reported to the fire brigade. A fire in a pile of tyres is almost impossible to put out. If it got hold of such a pile even a fire brigade pumper would ghave trouble dousing it.

I know because a mate had a small wall of tyres out at Sutton and despite the presence of the fire brigade it destroyed two backyard flats.

An ex of mine got in trouble with the council for having my dead car sitting on his lawn/nature strip. Admittedly there were another two there already…

a yard full of Fords eh ! dont just get rid of the cars, get rid of the owners too !

outdoormagoo12:37 pm 07 Jul 10

Just make sure they are crap. I had my neighbour call the council to complain about the five cars out the front of my house, which were there for about 6 days.

They were there as we had finished a lease on an industrial unit and were waiting to settle on another that we were buying.

The ranger came and had a look and then spent the next 90 mins admiring the cars, all owhich were immaculately restored and consisted of a Mustang fastback, a dodge charger R/T, 2 minis and a Prince skyline GT.

The ranger told him that they were not scrap and he should wake up to himself.

Funnily enough he was arrested for growing pot under his house about 2 months later. He admitted he complained about all these things because he was worried the cops might come to check them out and make sure there was nothing dodgy going on and catch him out.

There is a house of Ebden St in Ainslie (numbers withheld) that has gone one better. They have made a wall out of piles of ‘rendered’ used tyres.

We should have a competition…

Using google maps, who can find the house with the most number of dead cars on the lawn.

I’m trying to remember the street name of a bad one near a mates place in holt. Guy must have two dozen dead EA falcons lying around (for the best part of the last 10 years).

There is a house on the corner of my old street. He always have wrecked cars in his yard.. Every few years the Government forces him to clean it up. Right now there is about 10 cars that all look undriveable in his front yard. Most have smashed windows and/or panels missing. Its an eyesore and almost a traffic hazard.

Lazy I said :

Sure is, you should get in on it. ‘wrecking’ or ‘parting out’ cars is extremely lucrative business especially with the advent of eBay and the like… sure beats going to a regular day job!

On a more serious note though I was under the impression that there were restrictions to having non-operational / wrecked or parted cars visible from the street.

I know in other states, councils enforce this and are happy to pay you a visit if a neighbour complains. Have you tried calling CanberraConnect to see what they have to say about it?

Where I grew up, a house without a disused car on the ‘lawn’ is automatically assumed to be the home of an old lady.

What planet do you come from. It is an Australian tradition. A mainstay in our culture. Where have you been living. Cars rule our society. You might like to extend your view beyond your street and view the impact from a world perspective.

I guess you don’t like being faced with a reflection of unrestrained consumer greed.

colourful sydney racing identity9:42 am 07 Jul 10

Urgh. It is such an eyesore and surprisingly common in some suburbs of Canberra. It really manages to ruin the feel of a street.

You could try addressing it as an environmental concern, some of those items must be leaching toxic materials into the ground…

Probably be though if you just work out when they are not home and arrange the scrap metal guys to pick it up for free….
