Suburban fines rising

The Canberra Times has a story on the rising tide of parking fines in suburban areas as increasingly desperate commuters lace up their walking shoes:

Fewer fines were issued in the larger centres, such as Civic, Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong, but several new parking hot spots emerged in the suburbs.

The city’s ”beige bombers” were increasingly active in Braddon (an extra 1480 fines issued since 2008-09), Garran (up 645), Campbell (up 289), Parkes and Barton (each up 254).

Nice air quotes.

The prepacks(?) are under no obligation to you not to park there.

technically, yes they are – these prepacks have an obligation to the society within whose rules they are permitted to inhabit, so la mente torbida’s as well as your’s and mine, not to park there… otherwise, they are free to rescind their licence and privilege to drive, and park, a motor vehicle…

so don’t apologise, or lament…

Hey guys,

I adfmit my earlier expletives were out of order. However, I am fully aware that:
a) I don’t own the nature strip
b) It is illegal to park on a nature strip

The reason people park there is they are too lazy to park legally and walk an extra 50m to the cafes nearby.

Constant parking in these times of drought puts extra stress on the street trees that make this such an attractive place to come and sip lattes each weekend.

BTW, I have erected bollards to try and prevent this (with ACT gubmint approval) but there are some persistent people out there.

Why don’t you plant a garden on your nature strip? Use a stone border?

Stone borders are great until someone complains . Then you have TAMS on to you. Weather they park on the nature strip or not.

Seeing as you’re forced at gunpoint to use a car to drive to work, really it’s daylight armed robbery.

I want the pr###cks booked every time they park on my nature strip….I’m fed up with the abuse I get every time I question these idiots…maybe I get my friends (all 6 of them), and me, to park on their nature strip for 8 hours a day.

The nature strip might belong to the guvmnt but parking on it is illegal. Summoning a parking inspector every day to deal with the miscreants is the administratively correct solution but may not be practical.

I used to deal with cars parking on the nature strip of our units by simply letting down one tyre first offence, two tyres next offence etc. They quickly got the hint and moved on. Not a practical solution when it’s a single property nature strip though.

If it were me I’d probably leave a note stating that the parking inspectors will be called to deal with any vehicles parking illegally on said nature strip. If they continue to flout the law get onto the guvmnt to patrol your strip for a while.

With all due respect, I think you’ll find the nature strip belongs to the government, thus their ability to issue fines for people parking on it.

On the other hand, if you did own the land people were parking on, what might your rights be to charge for parking? Could be a nice little earner for anyone with a bit of spare land in a well positioned suburb.

Why don’t you plant a garden on your nature strip? Use a stone border?

Get over yourself…you don’t OWN the nature strip. Parking on someone elses nature strip is common practice in any other city if the commuter carpark round the corner is full. This is just indicative of Canberra’s growing population and lack of city carparks. Get used to it as it is not likely to change.

Canberra is so full of wide open spaces, yet parking fees keep going up and up….

So the ACT Government contines to keep upgrading roads to support more cars….a smart move by the ACT government to collect more tax from the poor sods who have no choice but to pay for the privilege to park their car to go to work.

Parking fees are the modern day equivalent of daylight robbery.

And it’s no wonder. I was booked for overstaying the 2 hour limit in Garran recently. I was only parked for 1 hour and 35 minutes.
