Suburban restaurant recommendations

Hi all,

I live in the west belconnen area and I travelled to narrabundah recently and had an amazing Italian meal at the local shops.

I was just wondering if there was any more suburban gems anywhere as I’ve been to most of the restaurants around the main town centres and would like to try some new places.

I’m happy to travel so north or south side it doesn’t matter.

Thanks.

gorman house hosts juniper, one of the territory’s finest dining experiences.

Juniper? Do you mean Sage (which IMO has mediocre food and their service is way below par)

oops, yes. [had one dang spice, had ’em all…] haven’t been for a while and both service and food were excellent when i was lest there. but perhaps they’ve gone off…

In the fine tradition of RiotACT nitpicking, sage is a herb.

Does anyone know of any restaurants that do decent takeaway Chinese in the Belconnen town centre area and surrounding suburbs (but not as far away as Dickson)?

china tea house, north lyneham, if that’s not too far – think they also do delivery [free?] but you could check. worth the trek, but. just down the end of ginnenderra drive…

No no no, don’t relate it to Ginninderra Drive. That’s just wrong.

It’s just north of Lyneham Proper…

Which borders The Grand Duchy of O’Connor…

A small knowable world is by far the best (-:

i was writing to the great unwashed, who mightn’t be familiar with the foreboding – to outsiders – fortress of the inner north… forgive me my sin.

Pearce – Rama’s and Ethiopia Down Under are both great
Chisholm – Fig and Olive Turkish is really good
Erindale – Soul Food Kitchen was good when I went, although I have heard it can be a bit hit and miss

Turkish Delight in Weedon Close Belconnen. So amazingly delicious. S***s all over the Turkish Pide House.

Vietnam Village –Page Shops- fresh and economical food.
Rocksalt — Hawker Shops- a little bit fancy and brilliant coffee
China Tea Club– North Lyneham shops– one of the most amazing Asian meals you’ll have.

Pistachio in Torrens has been reliably good for me.

china tea house in north lyneham is also a bit of a hidden jewel.

The one on top of Red Hill served the best boudin noir it has ever been my pleasure to eat, along with some other dishes that were also quite good, without snooty prices.

Again, in Dickson, but a little place I recently discovered on Woolley St is Tien (vietnamese). Probably not going to set the world on fire, however, I’ve had very yummy meals there on 3 occasions now.
And of course, for basic and casual (but incredible delishing!!!) turkish … Yarralumla Halal Turkish Pide. Can’t leave without an order of borek, and I’d eat their kebab bread every day and twice on Sundays!

red lanternes in campbell is the bomb.

also tried the nepalese plce in curtin shops, downstairs near q books – much yummy, and excellent price.

many others have been noted, including the suite in dickson (guesing you’re new-ish to canberra? most good restairants are in suburban settings). jehanghir in swinger hill and rama’s at pearce are excellent indian variatons (former routine, latter fiji indian) and while almost civic, gorman house hosts juniper, one of the territory’s finest dining experiences.

OP, I assume you know about all the restaurants in Dickson, such as Au Lac and Pho Phu Quoc? Dickson is unusual in having so many restaurants.

You are probably referring to places with just one or two; I’m not sure.

I was thinking of nominating Dickson places, then thought it’s probably regarded as a town centre equivalent rather than suburban these days …

Anyone know where the Phat Phuc has moved to?

+1 to Lanterne Room, A bite to eat, Rubicon, Aubergine, Pulp Kitchen

Also try the Vietnamese at Griffith Shops.

Mee Sing at Lyneham Shops.

Tudo at O’Connor Shops.

Beess & Co at Yarralumla Shops (for breakfast/lunch).

There’s a variety of styles and budgets there to suit most palates.

Santa Lucia Italian at Swinger Hill is pretty good and reasonably priced. They also have a shop in Kingston, but haven’t tried that one.

Though keep away from the Vietnamese restaurant in Swinger Hill if you are expecting to eat Vietnamese. Only Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been to that doesn’t serve Pho, and the menu looks like any other Chinese restaurant in town. That said the food was ok for Chinese.

I recommend Malaysian Chapter, Weedon close in Belconnen.

Thank you all! I am a big fan of Turkish pide in Jamison and the rest I’ll have to try!

Hopefully they’ve cleaned up their act in recent times, court gave them one of the largest fines any food outlet has received in recent years back in Nov 2010.

Not quite suburban, but King of Curries on Nettlefold Street in Belconnen is IMHO the best Indian I have tried in Canberra. Delissio at South Curtin shops is a great little Italian inspired menu in the middle of the suburbs. The Kebab shop at Yarralumla shops is meant to be top notch, but I’ve yet to test it. +1 on Lanterne Rooms recommendation above – to think it’s tucked away at Campbell shops is frankly a bit weird. A Bite to Eat at Chifley is an interesting little cafe for a local suburban shops as well. People swear by Rocksalt at Hawker shops, but I’ve only been disappointed there although it has a massive reputation. Page Tavern does a mean chips and gravy, but watch your exits.

Like steaks and beer? Wilbur’s at the Hackett shops is one that most people don’t know about. They don’t just do steaks and beer either. We go regularly and I’ve never taken anyone there that came away disappointed.

We went to the Saigon Restaurant at Pearce Shops on Friday night. Good food and cheap as well. Certainly better than the Chinese restaurant at the Hellenic Club.

Haven’t been to Rubicon in a number of years, but I recall that it was a great meal. Somewhat marred by a very hung over plane trip to and from Sydney the next day, but definitely a suburban gem.

La Cantina at Narrabundah shops is, IMO, the best Italian in Canberra. There are some great Asian places at Emu Bank – 2 Yummy is amazing. Pizza Capers in Jamison makes the best pizzas in town and the Turkish Pide House, also in Jamison, is wonderful (their lamb chops are to die for).

A few to try: Rubicon and Aubergine at Griffith, Pulp Kitchen at Ainslie, Rama’s at Pearce, Lanterne Rooms at Campbell.
