Second only to water, concrete is the single most used material on earth – and it is easy to understand why. As a building material concrete strength improves over time, it is built to last.

For the most part concrete resists weathering and erosion and needs little maintenance. It creates firm foundations, stable slabs, and offers excellent support for structures great and small. Concrete can also be beautiful! Suspended slabs are the backbone for some of Canberra’s architectural delights, and our landscapes glisten from Deakin to Dunlop with decorative concrete features.

So, if you’re looking for a top-notch concrete contractor in the Canberra region you have come to the right place. Whether your concreting needs are residential, commercial, or industrial, there is no doubt that you are seeking excellence from the piers up.

The challenge however is making a confident decision when you really only know what you’ve paid for once it is poured. Fortunately, we have selected a curated list of the best concrete contractors in the region. These companies can do it all, from driveways and slabs, to tennis courts, entire car parks and more.

What makes a great concreter?

The best concreters are not only highly skilled and experienced trades, they are specialists in delivering top notch finished products that are structurally sound and stand the test of time. Here are our tips on finding a great concrete contractor:

  • Qualified, licensed, insured. When seeking a concreter trade qualifications and appropriate licencing are key. The best concreters hold a trade qualification in concreting, formwork, or construction carpentry at TAFE. They will also operate with a building license issued the ACT Planning and Land Authority. If your contractor also works in surrounding NSW, they will hold a General Concreting licence issued by Fair Trading. Last, and by no means least, ensure your concreter is adequately insured. Chemicals used in concreting can be toxic and operations dangerous, so request for proof of their public liability insurance.
  • Highly experienced. A concrete contractor with over five years experience can signify that you are dealing with a stable trade with a reliable commitment. Experienced teams are smooth operators, completing jobs as safely as possible – and to high standards. Moreover, an experienced contractor can more readily attend to any challenges and is more likely to provide the right advice for the pour and thereafter.
  • Great reputation. While expertise is always key, reputation goes a long way to assessing your concreters credentials. An experienced concrete contractor will have a proven track record of consistently producing high-quality projects. While supplied testimonials are useful, reviews on third party websites and past customer reviews are most beneficial. This is so important as erroneous pours can not only reduce stability, but also be costly to repair in the years that follow.
  • Solid portfolio. To get a good steer on the type of projects your contractor delivers request to view their portfolio. Some may specialise in large scale commercial, while others are more suited to residential projects. Ensure you seek a contractor with experience delivering projects akin to your own. Doing this will ensure they are well equipped to handle any issues that arise. A quick review their portfolio will allow you to assess their compatibility with your project, and also assess the quality of finish.
  • Tight project management. As with many trades, concreting works require comprehensive scheduling of people, tasks, and material. Given the sensitive nature of mixed concrete, finding a contractor that can efficiently manage a project is key. Sub-standard formwork and a late pour can compromise quality and structural integrity. The best concrete contractors will provide comprehensive schedule plans with transparency over head count and time frames.

Important essentials to check before engaging a concreter

To ensure a quality installation to avoid a mediocre contractor spend a couple of minutes to review the following:

  1. Confirm that the concreter runs a registered business through the Australian Business Registration website.
  2. Ensure your concreter holds an appropriate builders licence by checking the Access Canberra list of Licenced Builders.
  3. Verify that the concreter hold the appropriate level of public liability insurance.
  4. Be clear on contracted inclusions, terms, and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do concreters need to be licensed in the ACT?

In the ACT, concreters are required to hold one or four building licenses issued by the ACT Planning and Land Authority. Should your contractor also operate in surrounding NSW, they will also be required to hold a General Concreting license issued by Fair Trading.

How much does a cubic metre of concrete cost?

Generally, concrete can cost anywhere from $200 to upwards of $400 per cubic metre. Prices can vary based on the nature and strength of concrete and the size of the project. Note this is typically the cost of material only, to which labour costs should be added. Approximate labour costs can range from $60 to $80+ per hour.

What is the difference between cement and concrete?

Although often used interchangeably, cement is an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is a mixture of aggregates, often sand, gravel, or stone; paste, comprised of cement and water; along with any additives to strengthen the end product.

Can it be too hot or too cold to pour concrete?

Temperature extremes can make it difficult for freshly poured concrete to cure properly. Hot weather can lead to too much water loss through evaporation, while cold weather can slow hydration altogether. Under these conditions the concrete can fail to gain strength, amongst other problems. Some experts suggest that the ideal temperature range for pouring sits between 10 to 30 degrees celsius. Check in with your concreter for advice on pouring for specific weather conditions.

How long does concrete take to cure?

The curing time for concrete varies based on pouring weather, type of construction, volume, and overall composition of the mixture. Generally speaking; concrete takes about 28 days to achieve standard strength. Always consult your concreter for cure times and advice.

My wife and i had a great experience using https://www.aceconcretingcanberra.com.au for our aggregate driveway – very professional team, and Tim was a pleasure to work with.

Used Pete from Ghunghalin concrete for a commercial multi unit job in Turner. They laid 1000sqm in a day no worries. Its worth hiring them just to hear the shit his boys say to each other. Hilarious!

We have been renovating our home for a while and have dealt with a lot of building professionals but none as good as these.
I have just enjoyed having Rick from “the Concrete and Paving Professionals’ rip up our old drive way and make a new driveway and entrance path to our home. The design wasn’t easy as we are on a slope and they had to make all the levels match. Not only was the quote very reasonable (the best of three quotes), he and his team turned up on time, were fast clean and tidy. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The result is simply stunning and it transformed the look of our home. We are so happy we have gone out of our way to say a good word about these professionals here, they deserve to succeed.

Well I can recommend you don’t use JMG Concreting or JMG, as they provided us with an invoice that was well over what was quoted, claimed they had emailed us the quote but had sent it to the wrong email address and wouldn’t budge on the new, overly inflated price. Choose someone else.

Hi I am a concretor I have 8 yrs exp if needed I could come do a quote on the driveway and take it from there thanks beau.

Wendy Durran2:35 pm 12 Nov 21

How much do you charge per sq metre. Needing slab put down

Hi, Great question, the new driveway is next on my list, but am very concerned about costs? any ballpark figures available? and does anyone know if you need planning approval to put circular section in (i.e – a new entrance section as well? )

We had Gungahlin Concrete do a solid job for us, on a 12-unit development, including carting away the horrible old stuff. They seem to do mostly commercial work but their website says “there is no job too big or small that we can’t handle”.

I’ve been using Mt Nez Concreting and Landscaping at my place. Good pricing, good blokes and have done a good job.
