There I was, about to post my answer to a Yahoo question about summer reception venues and the 4-day ‘answer window’ ran out! Thought it would be good to pass on the info anyway by way of The RiotACT. Here goes:

I agree that Bookplate at the National Library is an excellent summer reception venue. It will impress your interstate and overseas guests because the views are stunning.

I also suggest podfood (the best food) at Pialligo, The Boathouse by the Lake, The Sculpture Garden Restaurant at the National Gallery (you can have the mist turned on in the casuarina forest), Old Parliament House, First Floor in Kingston, The Lobby (near the beautiful rose gardens) Lanyon, Hudson’s in the National Botanic Gardens and the currently-being-refurbished Oaks Brasserie in the English Gardens in Yarralumla.

The Southern Cross Club Yacht Club will set up a marquee for you near the lake, or how about having your reception as a cruise on MV Southern Cross?

I’ve set up my celebrant blog ‘Michele the Celebrant’ to give information about venues in Canberra and the nearby countryside and I invite you to visit.

Mrs Caulfield and I had a summer wedding many years ago now. Our reception was at Mirrabooka as it was known at the time (at the Sculpture Garden at the NGA). It’s an excellent venue, although the marquee parts can look a bit shabby.

I’m not sure if its changed but you have to have the mist sculpture turned on by timer, so it has to be pre-arranged, obviously and it is supposed to cost a couple of hundred bucks too IIRC.

Sadly, I think the Lobby is an excellent venue wasted these days. Not sure the food is up to scratch.

If we were getting married now we’d probably consider Waters Edge, Bookplate, Axis or the NGA again; the sculpture garden is a great venue. It provides great photo opportunities and an ideal setting for guests to mingle while said photos are being taken. Perfect for newly weds who pity their guests by not wanting to spend hours and hours at some remote location getting endless photos taken, haha!
