Summernats declares victory

Summernats are letting it be known what a great time was had by all in 2013:

The 26th Street Machine Summernats, proudly supported by Rare Spares, has wrapped up today, with event organisers and the ACT police praising patron and event behaviour.

101,486 people attended the car event over four days in the Nation’s Capital, a strong increase from the 90,000 who came to Summernats 25. Entrant numbers were also up by over 15% last year, with a total of 1767.

“It’s been a fantastic event this year,” said event co-owner Andy Lopez. “It’s especially pleasing to see significant increases in the number of patrons buying season passes, which translates into longer stays in Canberra and a significant economic benefit to the Canberra economy.

“We were very pleased that the safety measures that we had put in place at the event to cope with the extreme heat over the weekend ensured that we had minimal incidents of patron heat stress.”

The ACT Police confirmed that this year’s event was arrest free, and they were not called in to intervene during any incidents. The Operational Commander for the event, Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson, said that given the size of the attendance, police were generally pleased with the crowd’s behaviour.

That’s gold but burnouts are still the most braindead activity known to man with drifting a close second…

Brain dead it may be, but there can be a lot of money in it if you are good at it. Winner of the burnouts at Powercruise 12 took home $50k just a few months ago.

I would suggest that the ability to drift with consummate professionalism requires an infinitely higher skill level than 99.9% of licenced drivers possess so while you may consider it pointless, those possessing the skill to perform the manoeuvres on racetracks are far from brain dead.

I put drifting in the same pointless category as race walking which itself is like a contest to see who can whisper the loudest.

Let me help with some rough maths (all numbers are approximate)

100,000 divided by 4 days = 25,000 ppl per day
Traders – 2,000
Event Staff (including contractors) – 1500
Comp tickets -1500

Realistic attendance for a whole dayof paying attendees – 20,000 @ average $50 per person = 1 million per day
Add in Traders, Sponsors, Camping, Bar Sales, Merchandise sales and other external revenue streams and it would be a fair question to ask the following questions
How did Chic “lose money” running this event?
Why do they need the ACT govt handouts to support it?

to be honest, your figures look fairly reasonable.

But…

Now, from that figure, subtract costs such as wages, venue hire, liquor licensing costs, insurances such as public liability (for an event like this, the cost would be staggering I’d imagine), and other operating costs. I think you’ll find that your theoretical $1m per day takes a petty big hit.

He’s got good accountants.

They don’t.

Huh? No I’m genuinely curious about the actual number of peeps through the gates.

The number is right there in the article. “101486 people attended the car event…”

I said I wanted to know actual numbers, not doctored ones.

I rest my case, Your Honour.

Here’s an example of consummate professionalism that few could match

And your evidence that the numbers are doctored is? Just one shred will do.

Or is your dislike of the event simply enough to know that they have to be making stuff up?

That’s what I’m trying to prove or disprove!!! A screen shot of every single receipt will suffice.

While we’re talking numbers, can you let us know the official number of bugs that have crawled up your butt and died apparently giving you magical super whinging powers? Just get over it man, we get it, you don’t like summernats.

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
Isabella.
Isabella who?
Isabella necessary on a bicycle?

Can we see ticket recipts for 101,486 atendees please?

Why is it that some people have a real problem with the fact that the Summernats might just have been a successful event that was a boost to the ACT economy?

Haters gonna hate…

Huh? No I’m genuinely curious about the actual number of peeps through the gates.

Wouldn’t 101,486 screen shots be better?

The key question, and one that would be hard to answer, is how many of the claimed 101,486 were locals? If none, then a huge boost to the local economy. If all of them, then no boost to the local economy and no justification for Government support. It would be somewhere between those two extremes, but where is an interesting question.

I know that approximately 25% of the entrant cars are locals, as they have Local Scrutineering on Wednesday night, and they pumped through 400 cars in 3 hours out there.

As for spectators? my semi-educated guestimate would be about 30-35% (based on the people that I speak to while working within Summernats)

Even if they’re locals it’s still a boost to the local economy, You’d have to also look at how many of those locals spent money they otherwise wouldn’t have or whether they would have even been in town if not for Summernats.

How many locals do you think go to Floriade?

It’s still a tourist event that drives spending, although driving back from Sydney last week there were quite a number of hotted up cars travelling to Canberra that could only be coming for Summernats.

That’s great for the local economy etc but now Summernats is over, can they please pick up their empty VB/Bundy Coke cans up from around Watson and don’t let the door hit them on the way out? Ta!
