Summernats have announced that the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (more commonly known as 3M these days) is sponsoring the return of Northbourne Avenue cruising nearly 20 years after riots caused the event to be called off.

The Summernats 3M Citycruise will take to Northbourne Ave at midday on Thursday January 5th 2012 to launch the 25th birthday of the iconic Street Machine Summernats, proudly supported by Rare Spares.

In a street parade of the likes not seen before in Canberra, a convoy of 200 of Australia’s best street machines will parade along Northbourne Avenue.

The Citycruise convoy will make its way from Exhibition Park along Northbourne Avenue to London Circuit, before turning back up along Northbourne to return to the festival venue.

“Myself and the other owners have been talking about doing this since the moment we bought the Nats,” said Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez. “It’s a great celebration of the Summernats in the ACT, and it’s cool that our convoy is going to drive past the hotels, restaurants, and retailers to whom the Summernats bring so much business.

It’s going to be a thing, although at midday chances are more limited for trouble.

Toatally, especially for us motorsport fans. GMC was canned, the ROC is a shadow of its former self, the dirt track scene is just surviving but is strangled by noise issues & the heydays of Tralee (which was an institution) are gone.

Contrary to poular Riotact opinion you dont have to be a bogan to enjoy motorsport.

Sorry Capt, as much as I love seeing a huge cubic inch Hemi V8, nothing beats BMW M tech for hot engines. A 500 hp 5litre V10. Mmmmmmm.

Still, I’m glad the supercruise is back.

Who needs supercharging when you have RAMCHARGING!

Mopar or no car!

That is all, Capn RAAF out!

Do they allow pedal cars, we all know that all you are competent to drive.
Your delusions of adequacy are tiresome

Fuel goes up

Summernats brings in a sh*tload of money into this town when its practically a ghost town, …

People keep saying this, but who gets the money? I don’t know anyone who gets this money. Where does it go? I know that Canberra ratepayers get to provide law enforcement, security, garbage collection and umpteen other services to the Summernats, but as for this cash bonanza they bring, where is that?

Dickson Woolies and Maccas, a few servos. That’s about the limit of it.

+1

But lets not forget the bikies and other organised crime gangs that rake it in through the brothels and sex shops. I just love it that my rates and taxes go towards an event that makes them money.

I didn’t realise organsied crime was involved in sex shops, only restaurants and bars (and apparently tattoo shops).

…and the coffee counter these days.

02PRUV said :

A few years ago I was told Maccas Dickson usually turns over $1m a week. Over Summernats they turn over $1m a day.

That tells you everything you need to know about Summernats.

Like any event. It’s always the very small minority that spoil it for the majority. And that’s what originally killed the supercruise down northbourne.

This event does bring in a lot of money to Canberra. A few years ago I was told Maccas Dickson usually turns over $1m a week. .

Um, I find this hard to believe. We just did a quick calculation, we estimated the average meal would cost around 10 bucks a hit (average remember), that works out at roughly 750 transactions per counter per day or about 11 per minute in a 24 hour day.

Not sure that is possible.

Don’t go forgetting the drive though, and I think you’d find the average transaction could be higher.

This event does bring in a lot of money to Canberra. A few years ago I was told Maccas Dickson usually turns over $1m a week. Over Summernats they turn over $1m a day. You might say “I don’t see the money” but it’s a big wheel. All the companies that directly benefit from the money have money to spend employing people and money to spend buying things they need and want. People get employed they have money to spend. They go spend money on goods and services. Keeps those companies going. Keeps those employees employed. And then they have money to spend. And so on and so on. Now if you just think that one fast food place can do the weekly turnover each day of the summernats. What do you think all the hotels, other food places, entertainment places, nightclubs, stripclubs, movie threatres etc get out of the weekend. A big event like this that brings in interstate money stimulates the local economy a great deal and benefits the majority of the community more than it disturbs the minority of the community.

This is the best news ever!

It’s just a couple of days of not being able to sleep at night cause of the noise of loud cars and the idiots who drive them. I also avoid Dickson shopping centre during the nats as it gets seriously unfriendly.

Quite frankly it makes a few days of summer absolute s***.

wildturkeycanoe8:45 pm 23 Nov 11

Summernats has gotta be more eventful than the Convoy of No Confidence. Taxpayers payed for all the police escorts for that garbage, why not spend a bit on something that actually achieves some real benefits such as entertainment value, money back into the Canberra businesses and also profits to the fuel companies who will raise their price by at least 15 cents per litre around January 1, 2012?
If everyone believes this is just a “Boganfest”, with uncouth folks entering our borders, well I say let them come and if they play up – pay up. I’m sure the A.C.T judicial system can reap the benefits of all those fines imposed for unruly behavior, defected vehicles, dangerous driving etc. We just need to have the police force present and ready to pounce. It’s not rocket science, they are advertising when they are showing up and when they are leaving. Get ready, get set, go!

I thought the government paid $200,000 for EPIC each year? So i wonder if they break even on this event.

I’m glad the supercruise is back – but it wont be a true representation of whats in Summernats. Blown cars arent permitted on the Supercruise, as well as some of the more radically modified cars. Supercruise lite if you will.

I just hope it goes smoothly and no dickheads screw it up. Holding it at midday should help in that respect.

All of the accommodation in Kingston fills up during the Nats, I’d imagine the same would be true in other parts of town. Whether it would be full regardless is another question, I suppose.

I’d say a fair few restaurants, cafes, watering holes also benefit through extra patronage. And don’t we keep hearing the brothels do okay as well?

The point being plenty of local businesses would “enjoy” patronage from Summernats entrants/tourists. Especially if Canberra is the ghost town that everyone says.

If you want to see a car show and meet and talk with actual motoring/car enthusiasts, I recommend Terribly British Day, Auto Italia, Small Fords Day, the French one that was on a few weeks ago and any one of the various other shows around that are frequented by people who love cars.

If you want to see drunk bogan trash and maybe see a couple of nice cars, feel free to head to the ‘nats. Meanwhile the rest of us will bugger off and come back in time for Auto Italia.

You know what, I know all these shows very well, I attend about 40 car shows in Canberra every year, … and you know what, a vast majority of the club members and people that attend the other 39 odd events, also I see at the Nats!

That said, I also tend to agree, in principle, with Mr RX2’s pov as well. I don’t really dig the Nats these days, but so long as it’s not a genuine nuisance then I more than happy to tolerate it.

Motoring is fine. I really enjoy Moto Italiano, the various bike meets, all the classic car exhibits.

Summernats is a bogan fest. It’s full of crap commodores and farking falcons and bloody bogans.

Have you stepped into the Top 60 pavilion? “Crap Commodores and Farking Falcons” which were the basis of the touring car history in this country, and sell for $50-200k? .. let alone the workmanship gone into the methanol fed blown show/dyno/burnout cars.

What exactly is illicit cruising? People driving along in single-file at 2 kph without specific authorisation?

Hah, if you’ve ever spent any time panel beating, lead wiping/filling, puttying primering spraying and polishing a chassis, or polishing wire spokes or alloys with 30 profile tires, the LAST thing you are going to do is throw a burnout in a public area and risk gutter bashing it or having a pedestrian roll across the hood. That’s why the actual cool cars aren’t a risk.

By contrast, s13 with fart exhaust – who cares if it gets crashed or confiscated?

I used to enjoy watching the supercruise on Northbourne, before the summernats became an out and out bogan fest. We’d park and set up deckchairs on the naturestrip and enjoy the show.

Nice to be able to see the cars for free. The whole Exhibition Park thing is unappealing, but the cars are fantastic moving sculptures. Only disadvantage is that it will probably be so hot at midday.

Holden Caulfield11:50 am 23 Nov 11

I probably won’t be here either, but would be keen to see how the cruise went otherwise. Used to be relatively harmless activity back in the day.

I guess if summernats had of self regulated this a bit better preventing those not doing the right thing from being there, it would not have been cancelled.

I have thought for the past few years that the police should block the entrances to the street in braddon and only allow summernats entrants to drive down the street on the friday and saturday nights. Then people there will get to see the cars that they actually want to see.

But there are heaps of people with sweet cars who come out to show it off that aren’t Summernats entrants…

which for the past few years have been far outnumbered by kids driving up and down in a beat up old vl or an excel or a camry which no one wants to see at all. So instead of getting to see some nice cars, the streets completely blocked up by cars that no one wants to see at all.

I would be much happier missing out on seeing a few sweet cars that getting to watch the same excel parked on the road in front of me for 5 minutes as the roads completely full and traffics not moving any more
