Summernats takes issue with police media

NineMSN have an odd piece of whinging from Summernats that the police have dared to issue a warning on burnouts:

“I would ask the police that if someone gets a speeding fine on the way to a V8 Supercar race, do we do a press release about that?” Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said.

“I wanted to make that point. I found it unusual.”

So….. exactly where do all these mature and law-abiding Summernats entrants practise their impressive burnout skills for the rest of the year ? I’m fairly sure they don’t just turn up for four days in January and discover they are fully sick.

There are many other venues around Australia that hold burnout comps, with substantial cash prizes on offer. Not to mention some venues outside of the ACT that have dedicated burnout pads for keeping this activity off the streets.

As a former local drag racer, I noticed a massive increase in the amount of illegal burnouts when the drag strip at the airport was shut down. The penalty for being caught driving like a tosser (burnouts, speeding, DUI etc) was loss of your CAMS racing license and being banned from the drag strip. No fear of that since having the drag strip shut down though.

Gold.

The real issue, for me, is where on earth do people buy those hideous sombreros for Summerhats?

Tee hee! Summerhats. I see what you did there 🙂

They are available from EPIC during the event. For $10 they might look hideous to outsiders, but anyone (especially my GP) would agree they look 1000 times better than a sunburnt neck/face/ears/shoulders.

Ah, therein lies the genesis of your post?

As a, often lycra wearing, cyclist some of the best drivers I’ve ever encountered were driving Summernats cars. I get tired of these cheap shots, lycra, car pride, whatever.

One thing you can say about the lycra brigade is that they are fit and take pride in their appearance. I went to the Nats on Saturday and the number of huge, overweight blokes with guts, beards and tattoos was incredible. Out of about 100,000 people I saw there I counted just nine bodybuilders. Methinks they should stop spending so much time and money on their cars and sign up at the gym ASAP.

You must be blind – there were roided up gym junkies in pink shorts everywhere.

I think Lopez needs to face up to the fact that his event draws some of the lowest people in the ACT. For 3 consecutive days I’ve listened to him on the radio news trying to tout Summernats as ‘family friendly’, to respect one another at the event, and that the event ‘hasnt seen any of the negative elements of previous years’.

If it takes the event co-owner getting on every media outlet possible to try and wash the negative image of the event, I’d say there’s something wrong…

Well the Sex Party’s Deborah sure isn’t helping his cause – I’m sure having a mother of primary school children showing up at Summernats in a wet T-shirt isn’t part of Andy’s “New Summernats” planning!

Give me a Summernats entrant over a white commodore any day.

I went to the Summernats today for the first time ever since moving to Canberra 15.5 years ago. The event itself was great and I had no issues.

I haven’t experienced the “nightlife” of Summernats and therefore cannot speak for the residents around EPIC, but I do know that anti-social behaviour is not necessarily limited to people in town attending the event.

I ran a Scout Group a few years ago and refused to hire our hall for 18th or 21st parties as there was a high possibility that some people attending would leave the hall and disrupt our neighbours.

Some of us realise that there’s no point in trying to change the mind of uninformed opinionated tossers, but Andy hasn’t figured that part out yet.

Sorry, turned up in wrong thread!

Bega Court, if you please! : )

I think its fair and reasonable that ACTP ensure that visitors to this event do not treat the ACT like their own personal hoon toilet. If you are coming to summernats, dont break the law and expect anyone to listen to you whinging about it when you get caught. The last 20 years I can think of, there has never been an event that has regularly caused so much disruption to law and order, and destruction of property. I think it is fair and resonable that ACTP remind the community and visitors alike that people need to behave themselves travelling to, and travelling from this event.

That being said, the work that has been done on the cars is amazing, I think all Canberrans enjoy this aspect of summrnats. As long as you dont break the law.

Pretty simple really.

I think I’m going to take Summernats’ side on this, I hear burn outs near where I live every weekend, normally around 10pm. but some occasions there’s repeated ones through out the night. Where the media releases then, or better yet, the damn patrols to catch these people out?

Should have crushed it.

If we still had V8s they would

big meanie ACT law enforcement hurting the liddle widdle eldery (‘older and wiser’) hoons’ feelings linking the increased revving rowdiness in town with the ‘nats (SURELY JUST COINCIDENCE!?). pass the kleenex.
