Suna traffic reporting is now live in Canberra. This is a system where info about traffic problems is broadcast directly to your SatNav device which then automatically diverts you around the problem.

Apparently the addition of Canberra brings Suna’s nationwide coverage to over 12,500km of Australian roads, and covers all main Australian cities.

However, if NewsRadio traffic reports are anything to go by, I don’t expect there will be much value for the average commuter. Canberra is lucky to rate a problem in the traffic report more than once a month. And I’d like to see how SatNav will divert you around a problem on the Parkway, Majura Road or the Monaro Highway – “At your earliest opportunity make a u-turn”

I’m a public servant, and I do get flextime, but I still have a roster and I don’t get to pick my start times. Only short vs long lunches and the occasional quarter hour of overtime gets added onto flex.

Half the time I am required to be there and start at 8:00, a quarter of the time I start at 8:30 and a quarter of the time I start at 9:30. As I tend to have breakky at work, I’m either driving through Fyshwick at 7:15, 7:45 or 8:45, and there’s rarely any major delay through Fyshwick, despite what they say on the radio.

Hume can be a different story, as the traffic light sequence at Mugga Lane is completely messed up (it is on a short cycle when it really should be on a very long cycle). But heavy traffic on Monaro Highway through Fyshwick? They’re dreaming.

Call me crazy, but start work at between 0730-0800 rather than at 0900. Smooth sailing every single day. If you drive to get there at 0900 then you ain’t got no-one to blame but yourself, unless your planning and time management is ordinary, as most people’s seem to be

Irrespective of whether one has flex, there ain’t no flex in school starting times. For all of us with young kids in school, smartalec, there is no choice for at least one worker in each household.

News Radio gives updates of actual incidents on Canberra’s roads far more frequently than ‘once a month’. Maybe if you listened to it EVERY morning, as I do, you would know this.

Yes I do listen to NewsRadio every morning. 99% of the time the report for Canberra is along the lines of ‘nothing happening’, as opposed to the other capital cities where there are regular reports of accidents, breakdowns, power outages, lights flashing yellow, and burst water mains.

Yes, I bet its nice to be a public servant on flextime. The rest of us don’t have the luxury of picking our own working hours.

This is going to be so useful!

THERE IS HEAVY TRAFFIC ON ADELAIDE AVENUE NORTHBOUND.

*waits fifteen seconds*

ALL CLEAR ON ADELAIDE AVENUE

A 747 could crash there and it wouldn’t make any difference:

ADELAIDE AVE BLOCKED. CALCULATING NEW ROUTE...
NO U-TURNS AVAILABLE...PLEASE WAIT
NO EXITS AVAILABLE...PLEASE WAIT
DON'T PANIC...DON'T PANIC

FYI, the “idiots” who do traffic on Mix are the Australian Traffic Network, the same people who provide traffic reports to every other station, including the ABC.

Don’t worry. They will just report false positives to make themselves feel smart, just like those know-nothings at Mix 106.3 do every morning.

They also usually talk about Majura Road being slow heading into the airport. I used to drive southbound on Majura Road when I lived at North Lyneham and worked at the airport on those mornings where my drive coincided with school drop-off time. Again, the radio reported heavy traffic when there was none. The only thing you have to slow down for on Majura Road are the changes in speed limits, the two smegging roundabouts at Bland Depot and the traffic lights at the end.

I drive to Fyshwick from northside regularly along Majura Rd and agree with the seemingly phantom traffic. Maybe it’s to do with the delay in seeing the traffic and actually reporting it. I saw a tosser in a Hyundai van the other day nearly get squashed by a B-double semi-trailer at the two BD roundabouts and then when the truck turned left on to Morsehead Dr/Monaro Hwy to go to Fyshwick. You’d think Hyundai tosser would of learnt not to overtake turning trucks after the first two near misses.

“just like those know-nothings at Mix 106.3 do every morning.”

The funniest thing about that statement is that you obviously listen to them every morning.

My favourite part of listening to the time saver traffic on 104.7 and 106.3 is playing “Can the Prawn get through his whole report without stumbling over his words”

Then there’s the fact that half the info they give is wrong. One morning on my way to Civic via the Parkway at 7.15am, i hear there’s a flipped ute Citybound no Parkes Way. So I take Lady Denman instead. On my way past the scene its blatantly obvious that the ute has in fact flipped BELCONNEN bound.

On every subsequent report up until the very last one where he finally corrected himself, they kept mentioning the flipped ute on the Citybound side. In the last report he says “That flipepd ute Belconnen Bound on Parkes Way has now been cleared up…”

Don’t worry. They will just report false positives to make themselves feel smart, just like those know-nothings at Mix 106.3 do every morning.

Every morning they report that the Monaro Highway is slow northbound through Fyshwick (they also usually mention Hume). Usually I hear this on the radio while cruising above Newcastle Street, Fyshwick, having not slowed below 85 for even a moment after the drop from 100 to 80 at Hindmarsh Drive, despite the highway dropping from 3 lanes to 1 at Canberra Avenue.

Slow my proverbial arse.

They also usually talk about Majura Road being slow heading into the airport. I used to drive southbound on Majura Road when I lived at North Lyneham and worked at the airport on those mornings where my drive coincided with school drop-off time.
