Sunrise Cafe Burger With The Lot. $10 lunch review

Sunrise cafe burger with the lot

The Sunrise Cafe has been a feature of Civic for a very, very long time.

I have vague memories of getting potato scallops there after school, and it was ancient then (over 20 years ago).

Chow requested I check it out to find out how the $7 lasagna rates in the Tasty Time Laksa review comments.

Stepping into the Sunrise Cafe is like a trip back in time. I’m not certain just how ancient it is, but from the burnt orange motif I’m guessing the 1970’s.

A charming old greek bloke is working the counter (complete with greek language newspaper) and sadly today they had no lasagna. So I fell back to the burger with the lot.

I sat down and waited 5 minutes on a burnt orange chair and Abba was playing on the stereo for an authentic time warp feel.

For $6 it’s a whopping burger. There’s cheese, and an egg, and a slab of bacon. There is tomato, and the lettuce is iceberg. There’s even a ring of pineapple.

Somewhat surprisingly there is no beetroot.

Basically it’s a classic burger with the lot and for the money it’s great value and well executed.

But you should go at least once for historical reasons.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Having just returned from there I would say I agree with Johnboy’s review and perhaps even reiterate that it is great value for $6. However I would say the flavour is not neccessairily something I would be craving for next time, but it does seem relatively healthy. I didn’t investigate any sauce options so that may be all that is keeping it from being a complete winner. The burger patty appears to be hand made and the lettuce and tomato were healthy and plentiful.

Paying after you eat was a nice surprise

Definitely worth visiting and deciding for yourself considering the price.

On another note, this place has one hell of a reputation though. At least three of the people I work with have had bad experiences with the food there previously and didn’t care to try it again. The other two people I ate with today seemed to share my opinion of the $6 burger with the lot though.

Personally I have not heard anyone complain, then again, I’ve never really asked!

I like the place, I’ve eaten there allot, from both the Grill and the Bay, and never had a problem, I also enjoy the fact that it reminds me of the place I used to stop at, on the way home at when I was a kid.

Johnboy, if you re review the place about 12 on thursday, you might just spot me there!

That burger looks like turd, how many heart attacks do you want to have during your lunch break?

Don’t eat garbage like this if you are trying to be healthy.

I’d rather eat that 1000 times than end up sounding like you!
(Just to clear up, IMO, you come across as a self-righteous, arrogant tw*t, who’s possibly healthy)

If I recall, sunrise cafe is a licenced premises – what time do they start selling booze?

I have to wipe the drool off my keyboard. That looks absolutely delicious!

Looks like the burger already has drool on it. Truly revolting, IMHO.

You might want to consult your doctor, I think you may be unwell.

Thank you for the review. I suspect it was wise to eat from the hot plate rather than the tepid bay. Obviously I shall have to find out what the trays of stodgy goodness taste like myself.

As for health concerns I think that the fat sugar levels of this meal are not really any different than most of the food reviewed in this section. If you want reviews of where to eat healthy don’t ask Johnboy.

If you want to eat healthy bring a carrot from your garden.

Hahahahah, I work across the road from this place & eat there a bit when I am feeling like a chicko roll or a dim sim. Everybody says I am mad as they think its a house of death.

I have not been crook yet & he also does crumbed chicken drumsticks.

Proper heart attack take away is a rareity in Civic.

What’s it called, the ‘Heart Attack Special’ or the ‘cholesterol burger’

Will try it out.

Another suggestion for your review series would be the doner kebabs from the kebab place on the south west corner of Alinga and Northbourne.

They do sheesha and stay open late…

Does this place begin with the letter ‘R’? A mate and I bought kebabs there one night; his came with a pre-chewed piece of mint gum stuck to the inside of the bread…

Will try it out.
