Your picture of the arboretum inspired me to take my dog and my sons there today for a walk around. I’ve lived in Canberra for nearly 40 years and I’ve only been there once before. Lovely spot, lovely pic. Onya.

Good thing you went yersterday. I heard the Rebels are due to have their annual picnic there today.

Close call, you could have been killed!

Ah yes, “The Lindsay Prior National Arboretum”. Formerly known as Yarramundi Beat until the bushfires in 2003 razed the pine forest which kept it discreet and hidden from Lady Denman Drive and the GDE.

In all the time I (and countless others) were using it as a gay beat I had no idea that it was a specially planted arboretum, there were just a lot of bushes and trees we could have fun amongst. There were a few times when I went there for another reason – when the chestnut trees near the lake were dropping their fruit providing a free feed.

I wonder if anybody will be commissioned to write a history of the Arboretum and its colorful history for the Centenary?

True, although apparently its use as a gay beat did decline somewhat after a reasonably famous incident in 2002 when a couple of law-abiding chaps were fishing there for inedible, bone-filled carp and were surprised by an older gent in his high heels, stockings, garter, and not much else. Apparently he used to strut around there for a while, get his jollies, then jumped into his car and leave..

Thanks both.

We are very lucky to live here. I’m not a native Canberran, or Aussie for that matter, but consider myself blessed to live in such an inspiring part of the country and world. I hope my photography reflects my appreciation, and awe, of this environment. Thanks to Riotact for allowing me to share, and thanks for all the kind feedback, you’ve made a happy man very old.

Beautiful. We’re very lucky to live here.

Thanks for posting this!

Canberra is a beautiful place. I run around the lake daily, and often admire how beautiful our city is. Those who dont like it can suck my hairy balls… (when they aren’t waxed of course)

+1 (except that bit about sucking your unwaxed balls) ….

Dont knock it till you try it.

+1 (except that bit about sucking your unwaxed balls) … I like doing the lake circuit on my bike in the early morning, and it is an absolutely gorgeous city. I feel very privileged to live here.

My thanks. 🙂
