Sunset over Gundaroo

On our way last night to a (delicious) country pub dinner and stargazing in Gundaroo with some Twitter space friends and overseas eclipse chasers, MartyO and I got distracted by light.

And what cracking light it was… Even a novice like me was hard-pressed to mess up with this subject material. Just as well – because the stargazing was a washout due to high-level cloud.

These are virtually free of post-processing—just some fill-in for the foreground on the last one.

The Lion King anyone?

Thanks folks. Appreciate the feedback. Hanging around MartyO is starting to pay off… 🙂

Was up on Mt Stromlo last night and got some more as the sun set below one of the domes, although I don’t think they’ll measure up to Saturday’s ones. Haven’t looked at them yet though as I ended up out late helping with some stargazing for a group of American eclipse chasers who were here. Included famous comet hunter David Levy. Quite an honour to be showing someone like him some of the things they never get to see in the other hemisphere…

Helping with stargazing at Narrabundah College tonight, so another late night.
(PS: stargazing available for hire for a party with a difference!)

Excellent pix! Canberra has some of the best sunsets around and the scenery to cap it off. Actually the misty mornings in the cooler weather aren’t bad either.

I may be preaching to the converted, but really, you should try experiance this from a motorcycle.
Seriously!

Bloody awesome!

Great shots Al, and great to see shots that are the result of being at the right place at the right time (either by accident or planning), rather than cloying HDR or other excessive post-processing.

Lovely shots! Canberra is a photographers dream, wonderful light here, (compared to Blighty most places have wonderful light though.)

After moving to Canberra from Sydney the thing that blew me away the most are the consistently cinematic sunsets we get here – blazing reds and magentas, cloudlines so sharp they look like skylines and mountain ranges and a light that fades ever so slowly down till there’s just a whisper of blue into black. Awesome! (and thanks Al)
