You may recall last year RiotACT ran a story about a rotating house being built in Crace?

Well it has been built, and you can buy it.

From concept to reality, superior in every way……’Girsasole’ (meaning to turn to the sun) is the brain child of well-respected local builder John Andriolo of MAG Constructions ACT P/L. This truly amazing home has been his dream since he was a 10-year-old Italian boy and was inspired by the teachings of Italian physicist, Galileo.

Supported by 28 wheels and driven by two whisper quiet motors, the home can rotate through 360 degrees and has been designed to literally track the winter sun through the living areas and avoid the harsh Australian sun in summer. It is able to operate at three speeds and is controlled by a touch screen panel, this is high tech, environmentally friendly living at its best.

The auction is next month, so break open your coin jars and check under the couch cushions.

Also, I turned 30 this week and you didn’t get me a present Rioters. So if all of you want to chip in together and buy me a rotating house, I would be totally cool with that.

Firstly, the verby of Girsasole does sound mildly reflexive (though the actual infinitive form is girarsi) and maybe it’s OK in some Italian dialect.

Secondly, the Allhomes listing is worth a look. Apparently there is one aspect from the site that looks over parkland that is claimed to never to be built over, although the rest is probably McManch and Colorbond fence.

Thirdly, looking at the details of the listing reveals that the house rotator has three speeds. That’s it. While I assume one is anti-crease, the question that comes to mind is that if you’re going to build this rotating house, surely you’d include a fancy-ish control system?

With a microcontroller, a variable frequency drive, some grey code and a length of stout twine, one could fashion a system with options to continually track the sun, or move to various points during the day, or to a specific position on command.

Girasole does sound like some kind of personal hygiene product, gotta say.

Or a swear word as in “pass me the rectinol you girasole”….

yeah but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s in gungahlin….

EXACTLY and no offence to those from Gungahlin either. I mean to say what is the point of a house like this in the suburbs, any subrubs? I saw a TV show a while back where they had a similar rotating house on a property somewhere up the NSW North Coast. That made perfect sense, but the burbs, common, what a waste of time effort and bloody money.

Its a nice proof of concept thing but the novelty would wear off big time I think.

Haha true! No matter where you point that house, you’re still overlooking a bunch of bogannaires camped out in McMansions on teeny tiny blocks.

Does girasole have a gasolier?

I’ve been playing too much scrabble……

If you didn’t like it, you could just turn it round to point in the opposite direction.

I’d be more impressed if it played itself like a vinyl record.

If only it were in Mitchell or Fyshwick, the song could be “The House of the Rising Sun”

Here’s the best I can do at such short notice.

That is the best!

I’m sure we could find something for you to sit and rotate on 🙂

Ah, just realised I misread the name.
Never heard of the name/word girsasole. :/

I’d be more impressed if, once up to speed, it lifted up on an arm. Then they could call it il Gravitron.

and at the end of that arm there was a hand in a white glove which carried the house off to somewhere nicer like Thing in the Adams Family

Baba Yaga was there first.

“has been designed to literally track the winter sun through the living areas and avoid the harsh Australian sun in summer”

My house does that without motors. It’s call solar passive design.
