Supercross coming to Canberra

Andrew Barr is throwing a bone to Canberra’s motorsport enthusiasts with the announcement that a leg of the first ever Australasian Supercross Championships will be held at Canberra Stadium on Saturday 7 November.

The Australasian Supercross Championships will not only provide great entertainment for locals but will help boost our local tourism industry by providing another great reason for interstate visitors to come to Canberra.

We’re expecting a big crowd so I’d urge Canberrans to get their tickets early and make sure they invite their friends and family from interstate to Canberra for the weekend to enjoy the spectacle of another first-class sporting event at Canberra Stadium.

The event’s promoter will bring 5,000 cubic metres of dirt into Canberra Stadium to create the race track. This dirt will be laid on a fabric and plywood underlay to protect the playing surface.

And yes, they’ve got Chad Reed booked.

So the gumbyment can hand out money to truck truckloads dirt into Canberra stadium for a on off event that may or may not succeed. Yet after MANY years of fighting they still wont give Canberra a permanent motor sport complex?!?!?!

Well, it’ll be the promoter paying for the dirt moving.

Beemer, it was Ivan Mauger and the event was Australian Longtrack GP.

Barr is being deliberately obtuse if he considers this event has any relevence as a motorsport event.

About the equivelent of a soap box derby at a mountain bike championship.

Cranky, WTF?

Where’s the “who gives a shit?” answer?

The ads on TV for this event make me somewhat stabby.

If over half of the highly aware, broadly based RiotACT community haven’t heard of Supercross, doesn’t this suggest that the organisers have a lot of work to do before November?

Ivan Major, bought world Speedway to Canberra including American and European riders, infront of a sellout crowd and had the lights turned out on the event, (ACT Government decision) before the last races were run, as the event ran behind schedule, and Ivan Major said that he’d never bring the event back to Canberra.

The draw card for the Supercross event is Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed.

Good to see, but I hope they don’t turn the lights out on this event as they have in the past.
As for ticket prices, there will be alot of upset children (who follow this sport) who’s parents cannot afford them, it’s a pitty there so expensive.

Cheapest tickets are $69 in Canberra, Holden.

Right now I’m pretty keen to check it out. Should be a great spectator sport I reckon. But when I find out the tickets are $100 each, or whatever, my interest might wane a little.

More options needed in poll. Like: I know what supercross is, but it clashes with the Bill.
