Since its opening, Canberra Outlet, located in the heart of Fyshwick on the corner of Newcastle Street and Canberra Avenue, has been synonymous with being the place to nab a designer bargain and shop for furniture.

With recent new redevelopments taking place in the centre, it is transforming into Canberra’s one-stop retail destination. It is now not only home to leading fashion and homemaker retailers but as of November last year, it is the location of a new supermarket.

And not just any supermarket, Supergrocer is distinct, as the Store Manager, Mark Weatherall explains.

“The Supergrocer concept is different from every other standard supermarket and offers our customers a world of choice, focusing on major international foods and brands that you cannot find at other stores,” he said.

“Supergrocer has two full aisles dedicated to international foods from all over the world with dedicated sections for products from America, Britain, South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, and the Middle East. We proudly have the largest selection of international groceries in Canberra and we want to be known for those hard-to-find items that you can’t get at other supermarkets.”

The international food selection isn’t just limited to the two aisles, which in itself offer up everything from an impressive section devoted to European pickles to American Twinkies. International food is represented in every department. Even the drinks in the fridge offer a taste of the world through its selection.

I was immediately drawn to the freezer section and the choice of New Zealand ice cream from the Much Moore brand. Said to be the Willy Wonka of the ice cream world, the classic and imaginative flavours of the range have been a hit with Canberrans and have been flying off the shelves.

Apart from all the exotic options, Mark shares that they also cater to the weekly household and business shoppers with a full range of groceries on offer. “We also have all your other grocery needs covered, featuring local suppliers and local fruit and vegetables delivered fresh every day. Plus we have butchers on site with fresh meat being cut daily and have Liquor Boss and a tobacconist right next door for convenience. For local Fyshwick businesses, we are always stocked with items they require including large tins of coffee, biscuits, toilet paper and water.”

Since opening, Supergrocer has been embraced by shoppers and in turn, they have embraced their location, with Mark saying, “Canberra Outlet is definitely different from any other centre. One of the only outlet centres with a grocery store in it. With convenient and easy access to plenty of free parking and a brand new travelator in the orange zone which is right outside the front of the store, it makes it very handy for shoppers using trolleys or families with prams. You get such a large variety of customers here which is fantastic and the weekends are always busy.”

I won’t rush there. I prefer to shop for local products.
