Suspended sentence for the sex scout

The Canberra Times reports that the former scout found guilty of preying sexually on the younger members of the Gang Show team has been given a fully suspended sentence.

Given how long the trial process drags out these days there’s plenty of time to polish up the character references.

Possibly of longer term import he’s now on the sex offenders register.

Justice Refshauge said there was an element of planning and persuasion in the young man’s advances towards the victim and the four-year age gap between the two was serious given their youth at the time.

Justice Refshauge took into account the man’s character references, which were described as “uniformly glowing”, and the fact that he was a minor when he had sex with the victim.

He sentenced him to a total of three years and four months in prison, fully suspended, and placed him on a good behaviour order.

What the hell is wrong with justice in this town?

The law and justice are two separate things.

My understanding is that suspended sentences are to be used as a “Carrot & Stick” approach to sentencing.

For example: Evil Paedophile remains in the community for X amount of years with 3 years and 4 months gaol hanging over his head if he breaches.

But isn’t this prick already doing a lengthy stint in the Hilton? So how the hell is a suspended sentence going to work whilst he’s already in custody???

You’re obviously thinking about someone else.

You want the other scout\childcare worker\accured murder plotter.

I’m pretty impressed that this chap got any punishment at all…

ACTSC is notoriously soft on sex-predator sentencing, vis: male teachers receiving suspended sentences for picking off their underage students as if schools are aggregated sexual opportunity centres.

Not wishing to draw any comparisons, nor debate the relative ‘wrongness’ of either situation, merely musing on the treatment of certain types of offences by our courts. Apparently females over a certain age are not victims of a crime, but tricky vixens laying traps for unwary blokes.

Wow, jaded much?
I don’t think i’ve seen many cases where a male teacher was let off lightly or treated any less harshly than anyone else in our lenient criminal system.
Can you provide some links to show us what you’re talking about?

Note for new players: The-RiotACT.com is forbidden to publish the names of the people involved, and was required to update its archive of historic stories to remove reference.
The Canberra Times, on the other hand, has been identifying him since 2009…

But seeing as his name is continually being refused publication, lets hope he’s not going to become a wedding or children’s birthday photographer.

Yes, it would appear that he is free to re-offend, and if he gets charged with preying on more 13 years old girls he’ll probably only get one more chance after that before he actually goes to gaol

I have always found suspended sentences to be a pretty weird concept.

nothing like preying on a 13 year old and possessing child pornography to show how “uniformly glowing” a person you are.

Good work ‘Justice’ Refshauge. You sure showed him.
