Sustainable community to be developed at East Lake

ABC News says that CSIRO and the ACT Govt are in partnership to develop a sustainable community at East Lake.

More detail from the CSIRO media release says that this is the area east of the Kingston Foreshore development, and that urban development has been on the agenda since the 2004 Canberra Spatial Plan. Their involvement will only be in the early stages of planning and development.

According to the 2007-08 ACT Budget, this partnership is only going to cost the ACT $350,000. CSIRO will be identifying “stretch targets” (whatever that means) and doing testing.

Hansard from 2006 has Simon Corbell telling the Legislative Assembly that they think they can build 6000 dwellings (I guess at least some would be apartments?) at East Lake.

Perhaps I’m just a bit cynical, but I didn’t see any commitments in the media releases that the ACT Government will stick to CSIRO recommendations on how the development should proceed if it’s going to be environmentally sustainable. Also no statement on whether the adjacent Jerrabomberra Wetlands biodiversity will also be considered in the development plan.

Let me understand this.

The Commonwelath gave NSW control of the ACT railways back in the 80s, who staffed the line with their owm emplyees.

So who owns the land?

Anyway, I guess they will find some contaminents on the site. So what? Look what they did with the old govco printing factory. They made a mozza on the land.

So Thumper they will make a tidy profit on the land.

I have tinyurlled the satellite map of the area. Cut and paste into your web browser. U may have to drag the image across.

What will happen to the Causeway residents?

The railway mob (built on an old tip folks) is between the Causeway and the wetlands. There was a tender some months ago to looking at shifting the museum next to Epicentre.

Hope they still keep a rail corridor.

Imagine the noise complaints from NIMBYs moving in there pissing and moaning about the aircraft AND road noise!

I would hope that the lifts can take ambulance trolleys not like a certain Woden high-rise.

Interesting.

Eastlake will be established between the Monaro Highway and Kingston Railway Station / The Causeway. The land is west of Mildura St and Fyshwick markets. I don’t know what the plans west of the railway line were. The two groups of historical railway people along with the miniature railway will be forced out. The sale of land is an important factor in the ACT Govt revenue stream as is evident in the latest budget

The original concept was to have a mix of commercial and residential highrise. I do recall that there were a few 10 storey towers about 50 metres away from the Monaro Highway. These will increase to make it profitable or economically sustainable. I would hope that the lifts can take ambulance trolleys not like a certain Woden high-rise.

East Lake is just a fancy name for West Fyshwick.

Bring on the Amsterdam lights.

Sustainable means building 450 houses on the site, rather than 460.

That’s what I’m wondering too. What do they mean by sustainable? It could be as simple as urban development not encroaching on the wetlands biodiversity area. Or it could be about greenhouse gas emissions. Or it could be about sustainable water us. None of the press releases really explained it.

whenever i hear the word sustainable, i reach for my browning.

sustainable is such a buzz word. I switch off when i hear it mentioned.
