The Australian newspaper is reporting this morning that –

“A SYDNEY man is expected to appear in court today on charges over white powder scares at three embassies and a federal government building in Canberra.

Members of ACT Policing’s Territory Investigations Group arrested the 35-year-old man yesterday at a Bondi Beach house where they seized documentation and computer hard drive material.

Police will allege that between December 21 and December 27 last year the man sent four packages from Sydney, three of which were discovered at the Israeli Embassy, the United States Embassy and the British High Commission on January 2 in Canberra.

Police will allege that between December 21 and December 27 last year the man sent four packages from Sydney, three of which were discovered at the Israeli Embassy, the United States Embassy and the British High Commission on January 2 in Canberra.

The fourth suspicious package was located by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade staff in their Barton offices in Canberra on January 3.

Police and the ACT Fire Brigade determined the substances were harmless.

The man was charged with four counts of inducing persons to believe a hoax package contained a dangerous substance or explosive and one count of using a postal service in a way regarded as being menacing.

The man is due in Sydney Central Local Court today.”

(Bondi? I wonder if he’s a Kiwi?)

Geez, Reader’s Digest – haven’t heard from them in ages. Do they still exist????

Mælinar Mælinar 10:56 am 16 Jan 08

They are the only post that can track you down, even if you don’t tell them you have moved.

They just haven’t caught up with you, … yet.

Be afraid. Buy a years subscription and stand to win $250,000 and a new BMW.

Like Sears Roebuck in the US…

They send you stuff even before you have an address!

It’s interesting that ACT police can ride into town in Sydney and arrest the locals – presumably this is because they’re part of the AFP?

Mr Evil Mr Evil 11:25 am 16 Jan 08

Maybe they used lollies to lure him into a car in Sydney, drove down the Hume Hwy, and once he was safely over the ACT border they arrested him?

Thumper Thumper 11:26 am 16 Jan 08

I thought AFP jurisdiction was only on Commonwealth land?

ie, airports, etc.

Can someone enlighten us?

Skidbladnir Skidbladnir 11:27 am 16 Jan 08

Strange that neither the AFP or ACT Policing haven’t mentioned it on the website.

Mr Evil Mr Evil 11:29 am 16 Jan 08

Maybe because the offence involves Federal buildings and Depts, then the AFP have juristiction over the arrest?

Whenever they search a terrorism suspects home they always seize documnets and computer hard drives… Does this mean that anyone in possession of documents or owns a hard drive is suspect?

Wherever there is injustice, you will find us

Wherever there is suffering, we’ll be there

Wherever liberty is threatened, you will find….

I suspect that the AFP involvement comes with the enforcement of Commonwealth legislation – in this case, the law relating to post (whatever that is).

Bananaman?

But Evil, is it ‘Subaaaroooh’ or ‘suberroooou’ – I said it one day and the guy screamed ‘you’re a kiwi!’

Mr Evil Mr Evil 2:55 pm 16 Jan 08

Yeah, it’s almost as big a give away as saying judder bars or jandals!

sjp sjp 3:36 pm 16 Jan 08

What the hell is a Judder Bar?

Pity we couldn’t prosecute those responsible for bombarding us with those numerous government pre-election campaign brochures thinly disguised as government communications.
