Sydney... you lie!!!

Last night, I took notice of one of those “there’s no place like Sydney” ads.

It started off with the usual bulls**t true statements of how much an impression Sydney will make on you.

Well, I guess if you count bruising from assaults as an impression, then it is true.

The ad then went on to sell a fabulous exhibition of works by “Monet and other impressionists”.

It made a big point of the Monet exhibition being exclusive.

Didn’t we just have an exhibition? Didn’t it attract a lot of interstate visitors? Didn’t it also have Monet and some impressionists? Didn’t the NGA use the same painting in their ads as Sydney is now using?

“A grown-up Auckland”

I don’t know what it is about that place but every time I’ve gone there I’ve just gotten depressed. I kind of wish that wasn’t the case because you can pick up some good realestate bargains in NZ but no real point though if living there bores you to tears lol.

(I don’t like it).

Really?

Sydney. An utter joke of a place. A would-be “world city” that’s a concrete embodiment of bad planning, overstressing resources and limited and localised attractions. A place where Alan Jones and Steve Price are listened to and where Piers Ackerman is considered an intellectual correspondent. Where rugby league is taken seriously. Manhattan in its imagination, but Cape Town in its execution. A grown-up Auckland.

(I don’t like it).

Melbourne recently had one of Australia’s better impressionist exhibitions. So this is a case of Sydney pretending Melbourne doesn’t count.

That said, Sydney can brag on art matters – but on the commercial gallery side of the equation more than the public gallery side of the ledger. Sydney is Australia’s Art capital and much of what winds up in musuems in other Australian cities (like Canberra) does originally trade through Sydney galleries.
