Tabloid Times

I note in this morning’s Canberra Times that Brisbane’s only daily The Courier Mail is to go tabloid.

When the Sunday Times went tabloid a while back, there were plenty willing to bet that the other six editions wouldn’t be far behind.

But alas, not yet.

Some argue tabloid newspapers are too trashy, but there are now plenty quality journals around the world that have done away with the cumbersome spreadsheet format, without any impact on quality or readership.

It’s been a while since our last email interview….

i remember when the sunday edition went tabloid, and teh magazine insert began.

they had a couple of interesting local columnists, ian warden was one. they had a regular ‘collectors’ and ‘my car’. nothing huge, but local colour.

these days its a joke. every edition has a hollywood ‘celebrity’ hawking something. is this what their research tells them we want ?

they would be better of shitcanning the sunday edition altogether.

maybe we shoudl start counting their articles.

categories:

wire story
local story
locally written story on international event
locally written on national event
press release transcript article

my tip would be that the last category there would be the biggest.

maybe we could compiel a list of questions to put to the editor of the ct ?

Yes – the Sunday edition is a joke, I don’t know why they bother with it.

Agree on the content issue. Regardless of the amount of info in there most of it is rubbish anyway.

good in theory but look at the sunday edition – flimsy, sfa news, about 10 pages of content max.

at least the weekday edition usually contains news. i prefer broadsheet. regardless of whether its tabloid or broadsheet, the content quality still needs to improve.

Yeah, nothing like reading a big-arsed paper on a windy day. Bring on the “compact” edition. (Apparently that’s what they’re calling the Curious Snail instead of tabloid)

The Canberra Times went tabloid a long time ago, in everything but size.

If CT was tabloid sized I’d be more inclined to buy it. I’m with Vic in that it’d be a lot easier to kick it back in a chair and read it – and there’s nothing worse than trying to read a broadsheet newspaper in a food court or something like that.

But they’re too small to wrap all the stuff I’m trying to pack into boxes in!

Tabloid size newspapers are so much convenient to sit in a chair and read. That’s why I prefer them.

Funny you posted this though, as a workmate and I were discussing this the other week. He loves the CT in it’s huge format, as he reckons it’s easier to scan through the pages at a glance and work out what to read, which saves him time. Me, on the other hand, prefer the smaller size for it’s convenience!

Each to their own!
