Take-away tip-off for vegetarians looking for some fried goodness - Chisholm Takeaway

Time for a good news food story! As a vegetarian, take-away options at the “local” are often limited to chips, potato scallops and – if you’re lucky – a toasted sandwich.

The Chisholm Takeaway has bucked the trend and come up with the most delicious vegie-patty-roll combo. A huge serving of fresh salad, perfectly fried onions and melted cheese make the end product a delight.

Add great service and value and vegetarians in search of a bit of traditional take-away now have somewhere to go!

Potato scallops – Chisholm struggles with these, though they do everything else well. The best scallops are at Livingstones at Wanniassa (the shops on Sangster, with supabarn) who also do superb burgers and chips.

Deezagood: If you are going to venture down to Chisholm than Zucchini Bros do pretty good Pizzas, they are the old style with loads of topping.

just like the pizzas theos in kambah used to make. sigh.

Were they the ones on Marconi crescent

I got a good lead on good pizzas tonight: apparently there’s an ordinary little fish and chippery at Karabah (some bit of Queanbeyan) that makes good thin-crust pizzas. So I may have to duck in and check them out this weekend. It’s bound to happen.

need to ask for pineapple as it’s not part of the standard ‘the lot’ package

sorry woody, but pineapple?? beetroot is the aussie way and pineapple should stay with all other things queensland, up there…

watson takeaway do a decent veggie burger too from what i hear (my housemate has them sometimes, though she’s not a vegetarian)

would you say she’s more of a part time vegetarian?

Or just a Vegetable? What ever happened to cooking your own meal?

I’m sorry but the best takeaways F&C’s are at Hawker chippy. I’m a Brit, we know about these things.

Cannot tell you what their vegetarian selection is like, never felt the need to look.

Damn you Woody, now I’m hungry! And I just had lunch…

not me. mings for lunch. deep fried chilli beef and special fried rice…

it will take ages to feel hungry now.

I still think that we all lost out with the closure many years ago of the glebe park eatery – I enjoyed working there and making calamari…

That’s what I used to think. We got a couple the other night and they were seriously yukky. Not cooked properly, soggy and the toppings tasted like poor quality stuff.

Are the fried onions etc cooked in the same oil as the fish etc? Y’might wanna be careful, is all. Watch out for tallow, too, blah blah.

Ahh Beef Tallow, also known as “haha I’ve snuck meat into your vegatables, secretly making you a hypocrite”

The guy from Theos is now at the other kambah take away at the village now, still makes good tucker, nice bbq barra n chips and my father swears by their pizzas.

Thanks for the heads up. looks like pizza is back on at my house…

Just wandered over the Chisholm Takeaway for a healthy lunch of vegetables (chips, bread and tomato sauce are veges, right?) and to make sure I had my facts straight:

– a burger with the lot is only $7.10, not $7.90
– a medium chips is actually much larger than a small – easily enough for a family of four
– Coles seems to be out of a few of the Italian softdrink flavours, but still have plenty of grapefruit and pink grapefruit (I went pink – good choice)

My thoughts are with you all as I sit here in my trakkies eating a chip and bacon butty watching Fraggle Rock.

Okay – my excitement is growing …. I suspect dinner will be very early tonight! I shop at Chisholm all of the time for fruit and vegies and walk past this place almost daily – but have never ventured in (not sure why, just haven’t) or gone to Zucchini Brothers either for that matter. Tend to go to Erindale for take-away, due to the variety available, but hate the Friday night traffic/parking issues. Am very pleased to hear that there are some other close options.

A tip if you’re ordering chips: the small isn’t (and for $4.70 (I think?), that’s a good thing). I don’t bother with the medium chips anymore – it looks the same size as the small, maybe piled up a bit more, but not worth the extra couple of dollars. The burgers seem on the pricey side (I think $7.90 for one with the lot), but they’re worth it.

The fish and chips remind me of the stuff I used to get as a kid – a fat, wide piece of golden battered flake, crisp but not greasy, the fish brilliant white and succulent. The chips aren’t w.nky french fries or beer battered, just plain old chips, but golden, nicely crisped but not brown, with a good variety of long, fluffy ones and short crunchy end bits. They do good pineapple fritters too – almost donuty, but thin and light.

They’d better live up to the hype now 😉

Okay, cool – on the list for next Friday night take-away (we have been making our own since the Dominos posts!).

I am also a good cook when it comes to veggie fry ups. If you would like to get even more tip-off’s meet me at the Chisholm Takeaway at 13:30 tommorow. I’ll be wearing a green tracksuit with my favourite “Bring back the Biff” baseball cap. After the tip-off’s we could go to Hogsbreath Cafe for dinner, but I only eat meat.

Are you going to the Raiders game afterwards?

Chisholm Takeaway does the best fish and chips and great burgers (need to ask for pineapple as it’s not part of the standard ‘the lot’ package). Take them over the road to Fadden Pines for an impromptu picnic. If you’re thirsty, duck into the nearby Coles, head to the end of the booze aisle and check the fridge facing the dairy stuff – they sell cold 750ml bottles of organic Italian fruit softdrink for 99c (lemon, grapefruit, pink grapefruit and blood orange).

Too cold for a Fadden Pines picnic, but I think you may have resolved my ‘what take-away shall we have for dinner tonight?’ conundrum. Bored with Slow Noodle Fast and Erindale Vietnamese, simply can’t stomach Dominos anymore (RA has ruined this cheap pizza dining experience for me), and was tossing up between trying the brand new Kebab place at Erindale (near the servo) or Thai. But will give Chisholm takeway burgers a try and those Italian soft drinks sure ound goooood.

Awesome! I love the Takeaways at Watson and Ainsle shops too 😀 Watson do the best deep fried Tassie Bugs. I will have to venture south to see what the fuss is all about 😀
