Tamil Sydney is reporting that Seran Sribalan and Vishna Sivaraj are hiking from Sydney to Canberra to raise awareness of the plight of Tamils.

While I think the Tamils in Sri Lanka bear an unusually high share of the blame for their plight, I wish the fellas a pleasant walk.

Their blog informs us that they’ve made it to Buxton tonight.

Liberal Senator Gary Humphries and Greens MLA Amanda Bresnan give their thoughts on the walk undertaken by Seran Sribalan and Vishna Sivaraj.

I would hope that this has nothing to do with the LTTE.

The “Tamils” are a group of people predominantly found in Sri Lanka and southern India who share a common language (Tamil) and mostly a common religion (hindu).

The Tamil Tigers or LTTE were (and hopefully not “are”) a terrorist/freedom-fighter group.

Being caught in the middle of a political and military conflict for decades the Tamil civilian people of Sri Lanka have suffered from both Sinhalese intolerance and the brutal of LTTE rule and on top of this were the worst affected by the 2004 tsunami and the Sri Lankan gov were terribly slow in getting aide to them. I don’t think that the joe-average, Sri Lankan Tamil bears much if any of the blame for their plight – born in the wrong place at the wrong time…

I would hope that the Sri Lankan government, having now won the LTTE/SLA civil war, is magnanimous in victory and accepts and integrates their Tamil population into their society and government.

Wonder if they’ll borrow Michael Long’s limo that got him to Wagga on his “walk” from Melbourne to Canberra?

Nemo: No (the list of proscribed terrorist groups is available here). Even if they were, there’s no suggestion that these guys are LTTE members (Tamil is an ethnicity, not an organisation) – saying politicians shouldn’t associate with Tamils would be like saying they shouldn’t associate with Irish Republicans, because the Real IRA is a terrorist organisation.

Aren’t the Tamil Tigers a recognised terrorist group? I dont think its appropriate for an Australian politician to get involved.

{robsitch} Like a TIGER! {/robsitch}

What happened to all those Tamils who were going to stave themselves to death outside Parliament House a few months ago?

Obviously it was a failure?
