The Department of Territory and Municipal Services has announced that roo culling is commencing this Friday in the Canberra Nature Park.

The ACT Government wishes to advise that areas within the Canberra Nature Park will be closed from Friday 3 July until Friday 31 July to allow for the controlled culling of over-abundant Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

The sites to be closed are in West Jerrabomberra Nature Reserve; East Jerrabomberra Grasslands; Callum Brae Nature Reserve; Crace Grasslands Nature Reserve; and Kama South Nature Reserve.

The cull of up to 550 kangaroos is in response to the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment’s report on the Inquiry into Lowland Grasslands in the ACT, released in March 2009. Culling will occur on critical grassland sites identified in the report where over-abundant kangaroos are threatening endangered flora and fauna.

These endangered species include the Grassland Earless Dragon, Golden Sun Moth, Striped Legless Lizard, Perunga Grasshopper and the Button Wrinklewort (a perennial herb).

Interesting no elected representative was willing to put their name to the announcement.

I’m a shift worker and many a morning a see, living skippy on the side of the road, I just slow down, I have only ever hit one kangaroo in my driving life and that was because i was going to fast (not speeding)but going to fast for that time of the morning.

We just all need to slow down at night and early morning.

I don’t agree with the culling, I’m with Misschief, we humans have done more damage than any animal.

Maybe we should have a “cull the humans day”, and all the rapists and murders and bad criminals should stand in a paddock and we can shoot them instead of innocent animals.

Let the comments roll in….

Roo cull happens everyday on William Hovell (especially the sections of road without lights). There is a daily game of “Frogger” from dusk till dawn.

Damn italics

I dare you to find one that proves it.

And you forgot to mention destruction of legless lizard, fish and eagle and whatever else habitat.

I feel sorry for the poor kangaroo. 550 is a huge number for that area. Perhaps it does seem like there are a lot of kangaroos around but people must bear in mind (and perhaps accept) that they are drawn to the natural grasslands and catchments of this area and have always been. Thanks to our domination of the region, kangaroo numbers are far less than they were in bygone days – I dare you to find a longitudinal study that reputes this. More should be said about human destruction of our natural environment. I recall East O’Malley’s endangered yellowbox woodland being destroyed in 2003 to make way for residential development. The woodland provided habitat for the scarlet robin. And in building the GDE, areas of Black Mountain Nature Reserve were revoked causing the loss of the Southern Boobook from that area altogether.

Sshhhhh … Skip! Keep quiet or they’ll find you!

sigh. Watch the activists do an International campaign to stop the slaughter

Skippy tastes good! And is good for you, too.

Eating and wearing Skippy (ie farming) will make sure we keep Skippy alive. (Possum fur is fabulous. Ask any NZer.)

Get rid of the ferals: sheep, cows, camels, donkeys, horses, pigs, cats, dogs,….

mmmmm, skippy burgers! :)))

And why not knock some off at Hume between the Tip and Rose Cottage? There are hundreds there…

Oh that’s right – fumes from the power station/data centre will do that.
