ACT Policing arrested a man for throwing a cup of coffee onto a $300 000 tapestry on Monday morning (February 20) at the National Library of Australia.
The Myer Tapestry which had been donated to the Library was stained from the liquid. Laboratory staff at the library spent several hours cleaning it in an attempt to restore it.
About 9 am on Tuesday, 21 February, police were called to the National Library of Australia to view high quality CCTV footage of the incident and were able to identify the offender.
Police were later contacted by security at Questacon and located the man in the near vicinity.
After a search of the area, the man was located and arrested and a number of items were seized that were identified in the CCTV images.
The man was charged with Damaging Commonwealth Property and Possessing a Prohibited Substance and will face ACT Magistrates Court this morning. Police will be opposing bail.
