A 21-year-old NSW man was arrested yesterday evening (June 1) after he assaulted an ambulance officer and police officer in Palmerston.
About 11.20pm police responded to a request for urgent assistance from an ACT Ambulance Service officer in Tinderry Street, Palmerston. ACT Ambulance Service officers were at the location medically assisting the 21-year-old man.
While ACT Ambulance Service officers were treating the man, he became aggressive and made a number of threats towards the ACT Ambulance Service officers. Due to the safety concerns and aggressiveness of the man, the ambulance officers requested urgent assistance from police.
Prior to the arrival of police, the man left the area but returned when police arrived.
The man aggressively confronted a police officer before an attempt was made to arrest him. During the arrest, the man violently resisted and assaulted the police officer.
Due to the seriousness of the assault upon the police officer, a sergeant subsequently drew and discharged his Taser at the man. As a result, the man was subdued and taken into custody and conveyed to the ACT Watch House.
The 21-year-old man has been charged with two counts of common assault. He was granted watch house bail and will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
