ACT Policing Criminal Investigations Fraud Team officers have seized more than 130 counterfeit driver’s licences, two taser-like devices, electronic equipment and a replica firearm during the execution of a search warrant in Turner yesterday afternoon (August 15).
Around 10am yesterday, police executed the warrant on a Turner apartment after a lengthy police investigation into counterfeit identification cards being presented at licensed premises around the ACT.
During the search, officers located New Zealand and Californian driver’s licences and proof-of-age cards along with paraphernalia and electronic equipment that was used to manufacture the bogus identification.
Officers also located and seized two taser-like devices and a replica firearm.
Detective Acting Sergeant Rachel Batterham from Criminal Investigations Fraud Team said that this investigation resulted from collaborative intelligence-gathering between police and private security.
“This seizure is significant as we believe it’s predominantly teenagers under the age of 18 who purchase counterfeit identification cards for the purpose of obtaining alcohol and entering licenced premises.
“ACT Policing often shares information with regulatory entities including the security industry, and we’ll be informing them of this seizure and asking the security industry to keep an eye out for counterfeit identification cards,” Detective Acting Sergeant Batterham said.
An 18-year-old Turner man will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
