Taxation in the ACT to get an overhaul?

– whether the mix of taxes currently levied is appropriate;
means: Damm! NSW has slashed Stamp duty. Now how do we stop people moving to Queanbeyan.

– whether the current ACT tax base is equitably and effectively distributed;
means: About time Paid Parking was introduce in the Parli Triangle. Show me the Money!

– on options to ensure revenue certainty and sustainability of the tax base;
means: where else can we introduce paid parking? Town Centres? Hospitals? ahhh… how about Tharwa?

– whether reforms are required to improve efficiency and equity of the tax base; and
means: Let’s put up toll booths on the borders and charge all those foreigners everytime the touch our roads. Why shouldn’t they pay for using our turf?

– completing a social impact assessment of any proposed reforms.
means: Will you be my Facebook friend?

Will this report be released? or will it, like the Costello review of 2006, be kept under lock and key because of the eveil contained within?

Well, yes he is doing his job if his job is to bag something that hasn’t even started yet. Or, if he was smart, he would engage with the process, offer up some ideas, talk about what the Liberals would do about tax policy and maybe even pick up some new ideas on the way that he can fashion into Liberal Party Policy.

What he has done though is practically write the liberals out of the debate from the start.

The real question, I guess, is bagging this review actually representing anyone’s realistic views?

Mr Smyth is a fair dinkum waste of space. He could have welcomed the review and engaged with it in a constructive manner by, you know, maybe putting forward some ideas or suggestions. But no, he went straight to the scary political talking point. Dick.
