Chief Minister Stanhope has announced that 25 new taxi licences will be up for grabs on 13 April.

“The Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) will be holding a ballot on Wednesday, 13 April for the release of 25 new, non-transferable licences,” Mr Stanhope said.

“The ballot will also include the release of 11 other, non-transferable licences which had earlier been surrendered.”

“The release of these licences will help increase the number of taxis on the roads and provide a better service for all Canberrans.”

A notice advertising details of the ballot will be published in The Canberra Times on Saturday, 5 and Wednesday, 9 March2011. Information regarding the ballot will also be postedon the TAMS website andthrough the two taxi networks.

Prior to the ballot, TAMS will hold two information sessions for prospective applicants in the ballot to ensure they are well-informed and understand what is involved in operating a taxi in the ACT.

Maybe the information sessions would be better conducted by the 11 previous taxi operatos who surrendered their taxi plates.
I’m sure that they’d have a much better idea than TAMS will ever have.
They might even tell the prospective applicants why they couldn’t make a living out of the business.
