Taxi fares rise again

The Canberra Times informs us that Canberra’s already ruinously expensive taxis are going to get more costly still:

Flagfall for standard hirings will increase to $4.50. The rate per kilometre on weekdays between 6am and 9pm will increase to $1.80. The kilometre rate at other times will increase to $2.07.

It’s a 2.48% raise. Mr Stanhope says it will allow taxi drivers a reasonable income.

Don’t hold your breath JTACT, if he was to start making sense now he’d know he’d have to throw himself out of politics earlier than intended.

‘Mr Stanhope says it will allow taxi drivers a reasonable income’ – NOT TRUE

Sorry Mr Stanhope but I personally know over ten cabbies and I can assure you that the increase will no allow a resaonable income. You have increased the overheads for cabbies by more than double in the last few years so you simply are not making any sense.

I don’t envy taxi drivers. It seems the only ones who fare well are owners with more than one taxi plate/licence. The demand is intermittent thanks to Parliament, and so many Canberrans rely on their car, which also undermines demand for taxis.

It’s a small increase given the ACT industry’s difficulties.

GovCo not charging $8000 per year to register a taxi in the ACT would also help with that…

Thats alright, the more the fare’s goes up, the more taxi’s won’t be used and their incomes won’t be “reasonable” anyways ……. If they lowered them, you may find more people using taxi’s (more work, more money in their pockets) and may make more people less inclined to drink and drive because the taxi fare costs too much (not that it’s an excuse to D&D)

40 bucks for a round trip airport to london cct, I’d rather hire a car, thats what I do just about anywhere I travel.

Just for sport, jump in a cab at the airport and ask to be taken to Beltana Rd, Pialligo. Cheaper than going to a movie and in full 3D.

Australia is a very wealthy country, and our cost of living reflects this. Taxis are very expensive here, which is why it is worth planning to use them as little as possible (or just for work when you aren’t paying).
