The Australian Education Union (AEU) has released a flyer as part of their community campaign for better investment in ACT public education. It reads in part:

All teachers and school leaders deserve salary parity with NSW to ensure ACT public school teacher salaries remain competitive. The Government offer of 9 September will still leave school leader salaries and casual relief rates behind those in NSW. School leaders will continue to be out of pocket by thousands of dollars per year. Casual relief teacher rates will still be $21 per day behind NSW which does not address the supply issues experienced in ACT schools. The 9 September offer for 2.5% salary increases in the second and third years will not maintain competitiveness with other states and does not recognise the cost of living pressures in the ACT.

The full flyer can be found here on the AEU web site.

“Better investment” implies that you’re actually getting something for your money. The AEU has not brought any evidence to bear that learning outcomes for students will improve as a result of the salary increases it is demanding for teachers. In fact, PISA scores for Australian students have been dropping over the past decade, and the steady drift of students from the government to the non-government education sector is evidence that parents are not satisfied with the education that is being delivered under the principals and vice-principals on whose behalf the AEU is advocating.

“Salary parity”, if it occurs, should be tied to parity of working conditions, as well. ACT teachers can have salary parity when they’re willing to accept the larger class sizes, longer school terms and worse facilities that NSW teachers have to put up with.
