Teaching First Aid in the ACT

By nanzan - 9 August 2010 6

I am thinking of becoming a First Aid instructor in the ACT.

Does anyone out there amongst us at RiotACT already do this particular job? Does anyone know what qualifications and background are necessary or desirable? And what about potential employers – mainly St John Ambulance and Red Cross?

Has anyone had any particularly good or bad experiences recently with First Aid instructors at a first aid course in Canberra, or elsewhere?

What’s Your opinion?

Hello,

I work for st John Ambulance. We have a mix of paid and volunteer trainers, not all from the medical field. To become a trainer it is desirable for you to have a certificate IV so you can teach, with us providing you with the knowledge to teach in a First aid environment.
You can email me at newmembers@stjohnact.com.au and I can pass your enquiry on to our training manager and she can provide you with more detailed information.

As people are saying, there are a bunch of private companies who use paid instructors, in addition to various organisations who run the courses using volunteer labour (St Johns, Red Cross, RFS, Scouts, etc).

The people I have been instructed by, as others have said, tend to have either been doing it for a long time, or are ex-ambo types. This might make it a little hard to break into the industry?

Hi

If you like, you can contact First Aid Services directly at info@firstaidservices.net.au and forward a CV

i’ve had my Senior First Aid for a number of years, so i’ve been trained a few times. Most of the instructors used to be ambulance officers, and are using their new position as something a little more relaxed.

Yes they are paid.

St John and Red Cross all use volunteers as far as I know. Parasol tend to employ ex ambos – or that used to be the case. TAFE/CIT and the like tend to employ Red Cross/St John volunteer trainers who have plenty of experience.

I received my senior first aid training a few years ago from Parasol EMT in Fyshwick. The instructor was really good, he was an ex-paramedic so had a lot of realistic advice.
