The ACT has one of the highest sport participation rates in the country, with over 35 per cent of locals playing sport on a regular basis, according to recent census data.

That’s a lot of registration forms, and a lot of administrative work, particularly when paper-based processes and manual cash handling are involved. But now, Canberra technology start up CutOrange is taking the hard work out of sports club administration and registration with an innovative digital platform of the same name.

Product manager Alex Belperio describes CutOrange as a social membership platform for sporting clubs.

“The idea behind CutOrange is that clubs can set up an online registration process in a secure digital space. They can collect payments for registration, manage events, share organisational news and send out mass communications by email and SMS,” he says.

“With CutOrange, the entire experience is digital. You can manage a club without paper forms and can even better handle cash payments. All the club information you need is in the platform.”

CutOrange counts local league, union, soccer, cycling, football and boxing clubs among its Canberra users, but its biggest client is Boxing Australia, which it has worked with for just over 12 months.

“Boxing Australia’s challenge was managing participant information across a widespread base. There are boxers in small gyms in remote communities right up to Olympic competitors and national titles, and there was very little visibility over who was actually participating in the sport,” Alex says.

“By managing registrations and posting competition results online using CutOrange, Boxing Australia will be better placed to capture the true number of boxers across the country. Their aim now is to move from a paper-based process to one that’s entirely digital.”

CutOrange is also highly scalable, so it is suitable for local grassroots clubs and primary school sport, right up to sports with large participation rates such as Aussie Rules, netball and cricket.

Alex says that users don’t need to be IT experts to make the most of the platform.

“We’ve got users ranging from those who have barely used a computer right up to software developers. We have an online helpdesk, so users can sign up, get started and talk to us whenever they need.”

Sporting clubs interested in streamlining team management can use CutOrange to manage mass email communications at no cost. The platform takes a small cut of each transaction conducted on the site but does not charge for email communication to players and parents.

“Rather than the email addresses or phone numbers getting lost when an administrator moves on, that important information is always alive and evolving within CutOrange,” Alex says.

Advertising Feature?

Just a Canberra company doing interesting things in technology. Not an advertorial.

Looks pretty much like an advertorial to us!

Either that or a word for word copy from a press release. 😛

No press releases were harmed (or copied) in writing this article :p

How is this different to SportingPulse? They already have the market sewn up.

In details, those questions are:
Does it have competitions management?
Do you have leverage on merchant fees?
Do you have a credit card gateway for manual payments?
Can you have system generated payments?
What are your fee structures?
Do you have the ability to make multiple payments against a single invoice? (One of biggest gripes with SportingPulse! Nearly everyone pays by installments).
What is your reporting structure look like? What info can you draw out if it?
Do you have SMS as well as email management? Do you educate participants on not breaching the Privacy Act?

Hi eatthatfrog,

Thanks for the questions 🙂

In terms of what you’ve asked:

We have the basic frameworks for events in place, but competitions is something we’re working on in 2015 with the boxing work being completed. We’re building it as flexible as possible to be applicable to other sports.

Do you have leverage on merchant fees?
>> we will as our volume grows.

Do you have a credit card gateway for manual payments?
>> Yes we do…
Can you have system generated payments?
>>yes

What are your fee structures?
>> transaction fees, so Clubs don’t have to go and fork out massive hosting and maintenance fees just to collect their registrations for the year.

Do you have the ability to make multiple payments against a single invoice? (One of biggest gripes with SportingPulse! Nearly everyone pays by installments).
>> Yes we do, and Club admins can keep record of those payments against a member.

What is your reporting structure look like? What info can you draw out if it?
>> anything

Do you have SMS as well as email management?
>> Yes we do have SMS and also, all messaging can be set from admin/positions not as individuals. The idea of being role-based means when someone moves into a position the history of communications comes with the position.

Do you educate participants on not breaching the Privacy Act?
>> This isn’t really our role. The ASC has good information on this, but we encourage clubs to publish their terms and conditions, waiver and privacy policies. You can publish terms and conditions, waivers and privacy policies as part of the process when you create online membership registrations in CutOrange.

If you’ve got any more you’d like to chat to us about, feel free to send an email to media@cutorange.com or leave another comment. Thanks 🙂
