Andrew Barr has let it be known that Telstra are showing off their historical collection:

An exhibition showcasing a range of rare and interesting telecommunications items is now open at Telstra Tower.

This morning I joined Telstra chief executive officer David Thodey to officially open the Heritage Telstra Centenary Exhibition at Telstra Tower.

As part of Canberra’s centenary celebrations, Telstra is showcasing items from its Heritage Collection to the public at the tower throughout 2013.

Accumulated over more than 50 years, it contains items developed and used across Australia as part of the Postmaster-General’s (PMG) Department, Australian Overseas Telecommunications Corporations (AOTC), Telecom and Telstra.

The display includes devices that played a role in important moments in Australian history. This includes the microphones used to announce Australia’s declaration of war at the beginning of World War II, and to officially open Parliament House in 1927. Also on display are a scrambler phone used by former Prime Minister Robert Menzies and the home phone of another former Prime Minister Billy Hughes.

If you want to see 50 year old telecommunications infrastructure just lift the cover on your local telstra pit.

My suburb was built in 1989 so I don’t think that’s going to work.

I just want to see a kid try and use a rotary dial phone…

I think that launching all these 2013 events in 2012 smacks of electioneering. In fact, now I’m wondering whether Robyn Archer and Katie Gallagher cooked up “early celebrations” long ago for just that bit of PR shine they think might help Labor along.
I am wishing a LIBERAL victory on Robyn Archer! Zed, Zed, Zed next to Robyn at every centenary event! (Except the Eros Foundation/sex industry theatre piece that’s in the program – Robyn can probably have Simon or Andrew along to that one as the Libs are likely to decline the invite).

If you want to see 50 year old telecommunications infrastructure just lift the cover on your local telstra pit.
