Tenders out for the time travel busway

Chief Minister Gallagher is calling for tenders for the Belconnen to City Transitway project.

“The Belconnen to City Transitway project will make public transport more attractive and accessible for people travelling between Belconnen and the City.

“Due to commence in early-2012, the first stage of work will include a continuous dedicated bus lane on Barry Drive from Clunies Ross Street through to Kingsley Street in the City; a new major bus station at City West integrated with the new ANU Exchange development; on and off-road cycling facilities along Barry Drive; and new pedestrian facilities.”

The Chief Minister said the project will be undertaken in stages with work in the Belconnen area planned to commence in 2012-13.

“Subject to future funding, other stages of work will include bus priority measures along College Street and Haydon Drive in Belconnen and the duplication of College Street,” the Chief Minister said.

The Busway has been a subject of mirth on this site since 2004 when Simon Corbell claimed it would knock fifteen minutes off a journey which, at the time, was regularly completed in 14 minutes.

Th level headed John Hargreaves and Ted Quinlan killed it off in their time, but with their departure from the stage it appears to be steaming ahead again.

No sh*t the community wouldn’t be too happy, it would make peak hour traffic significantly worse for motorists for a marginal improvement in travel times for buses.
The intertown busses are already packed during peak hour – people already use them, they already work reasonably well. There’s not a significant benefit to putting in another lane unless you’re actually going to say… double the number/frequency of busses running at peak times between the interchanges (and then have them actually used, which means getting more people to the interchanges in the first place).

This proposal is the solution to a problem nobody complained about – the issues with the bus system are around the suburban routes, the time it takes to get *to* an interchange from the suburbs or vice versa, the frequency of those services and their reliability. The intertown corridors work relatively well and don’t have a particularly big problem as far as travel times are concerned anyway.

It goes without saying that John Hargreaves was probably the worst minister for transport we have ever had and John Stanhope wasn’t much better either ,even as a keen cyclist(Stanhope) he failed to deliver on international best practice for cycle infrastructure.

It certainly was a visionary project by Simon Corbell back in 2004, based on Brisbane’s bus-ways by building a separate bus-way tunneling through Black mountain(one option).
The simple and best solution is to use the centre lanes on Belconnen way, reclaiming the road space from motor vehicle traffic but then we know the community wouldn’t be happy with that!
