Test match cricket for Manuka at Perth's expense?

Geoff Koop on The Roar is engaging in some wishful thinking about getting Test cricket here to Canberra.

At the end of the day we might get the odd one but it’s hard to see the cricketing world letting the vast Perth market wither in favour of Canberra’s small population so very close to Sydney.

Let’s get our own T20 team before we dream too much of the glories of Test cricket.

I hear that the WACA will not be used until the 5 man expedition to find out what lies at the bottom of the cracks in the pitch returns.

Oh come on, people! The WACA is a unique place, where the fast bowler can express him or herself in reckless ways.

It has a Broad appeal.

Who’s this wacker from Perth you are all talking about?

The way I read it in the SMH it would only be a one-off while the new stadium is built at Burswood.

The new stadium isn’t actually meant as WACA replacement, though may end up that way.

Problem is Bangladesh usually gets shoehorned into June July and the tests played in Darwin and Cairns…..

I think a test in Manuka for a weaker side would draw a bigger crowd than say Adelaide/Perth/Hobart, just because its not been played here often. Even a test every 4-5 years should be possible.

I think the issue is the calendar is so congested, next year we only have 4 tests against India and Perth miss out while the new stadium is still being built.

Yep, can’t really see this happening. The WACA may not be up to scratch but with most series now being three matches only it’ll be pretty easy to find alternate host venues.

Even if we play two countries in the summer, totalling six Tests, I’m pretty sure Cricket Australia would find the gate receipts more appealing if they had repeat matches in larger markets.

On the other hand, if Hobart can get a semi-regular Test match there’s no reason to at least hope we might land the odd one here or there.

Bangladesh, here we come!

The way I read it in the SMH it would only be a one-off while the new stadium is built at Burswood.
