My profound and heartfelt thanks to all who came to my aid last night, when my motorbike collided with a taxi in Woden.

I was cut up by a right turning taxi, who claimed not to have seen me, despite my wearing a dayglo jacket and having my lights on.

The large number of people who assisted me, offed to be witnesses, called the ambulance and police, and generally saw to my welfare all have my undying gratitude.

A massive THANK YOU to the young lady who looked after my now wrecked bike, got it transported to a safe place, and has offed to return it to my house, who showed caring and compassion to a total stranger that gives one renewed faith in the human race.

Suffice to say after a night in the kind and wonderful care of Canberra hospital I am now home, with broken collarbone and messed up knee and pelvis, typing to you all left-handed on the wife’s I-pad!

Thanks very much mate, you’re a very good person. But my time here is over. Only 2/3 of my posts get through, and it’s really not worth the candle, esp now when I’m writing left handed. Bye bye all.

That was ever so kind of you to offer. (they will know what I mean.)

No problems PB – just let us know. Naturally, this doesn’t negate any issue that we discuss on this forum where you feel obliged to ‘give it to me in the neck’.

Get better soon mate.

So you ride in Canberra and you haven’t heard of CanberraRIDERS? Where u been?

He must have been hanging around ACT riders waiting for someone to get there.

Hope you’re better soon PB

Sorry to hear about your bingle PB, and glad to hear that you’re OK. I rode for many years until I was almost killed in a car crash. One of the results of that was a reevaluation of the wisdom of motorcycling, and a decision to stick to four wheels in the future.

I suspect I might be dead if I’d stayed on my bike.

Great to hear that you are ok and getting back on a bike soon PB. Yep, when riding you gotta pretend everyone is trying to hit you – end up a lot safer that way. What kind of bike did you have and what are you getting??

Can I be so gauche as to plead for you to get off the widow maker and find a less dangerous form of transport. Been there, done that. Got off it when a mechanical fault nearly killed me. End of rant!!.

But may I also thank the 5 or so witnesses who went totally out of their way to assist me and the unfortunate (and unfortunately recently uninsured) lady who ran a red light, totalling her Mercedes and not doing my vehicle any favours, in a recent coming together.

Thank you to the 3 ladies (some with kids in the car). who stood around in spitting, cold rain, to ensure the lady was OK, and that they could assist with witness statements. I’m talking about 25-30 minutes here, a goodly chunk of most peoples schedule.

There are a hell of a lot more good people in this town than the scrotes that make the headlines.

Sorry, no British in my lineage whatsoever PB.
My name is referring to Jethro Bodine, the loveable halfwit from Beverly Hills.

The taxi driver wasn’t Welsh by any chance????

He sounded Welsh, but was actually Indian, hard to tell the difference at times.

Get well soon, mate.

I hope the taxi driver has learnt a valuable lesson – although, judging by the quality of taxi drivers in Canberra, something makes me think that they probably won’t have.

“Extreme Conservative views” PB? What about your belief in climate change?

‘Belief’ being the operative word…

Glad to hear you can still type, as any heated Left/Right bout would not be the same without you.

Good luck, best wishes and happy riding.

Again, I am deeply touched by the warm wishes here, I cannot thank you enough.

I’m still on crutches, and still finding it difficult to sleep, despite quiet fun pain meds, due to pains in my shoulder.

My good lady wife, Mrs Aussie Bastard has been an absolute brick, God I love that woman! We have guests staying with us this week, other ex-pat poms, and the burden of catering to them, not that it is a burden per se, has fallen squarely on her shoulders. This is on top of helping me with normal functions, the type of which I’m sure you’d prefer not to hear about.

Opening thus thread today, and reading good wishes from those who I have “different” views to, (CSRI and Jethro esp) is wonderfully warming and heartening. Beers on me if ever we meet, boys.

Oh and aother massive thank you to the kind and caring staff of Canberra hospital! We are blessed fellow citizens with a fine facility there, and fine staff to “person it”.

Bloody Poms, always complainin’….if it aint the weather it’s their broken collarbones!

Harden up!

Yeah… I think this is JB’s way of telling me to pay up so I can edit my comments. So much for the stop button on my browser.

Don’t forget his contempt for religion!

Good to hear you are ok, PB. (Well if broken bones count as ok).

Good to hear you are ok PB. Well, relatively ok.

Good to hear you are ok PB.

Glad to hear you survived it! Hope you’re well soon.

Glad you are okay and I hope they have given you sufficient medication to induce an appreciation of public art.

all the best for the recovery

It didn’t happen to be TX 28 did it? A driver of that car tried to pass me and others over a double yellow line and a traffic island the other morning so it was on the incorrect side of the road into a roundabout with 2 lanes exiting and entering on all sides.

wonder where he was expecting to get too as he’s facing oncoming cars in their lane…

Wow PB – I hope you get better real quick. Your photos are a real inspiration to me. Hope you can get back behind the lens real soon!

Leigh.

Glad you are OK PB, I cringe every time I hear about a bike being wiped out in Canberra, even when it is a pom. Where in Woden was it, I saw some cops near the health buildings as I was getting on my bike to go home last night.

Belief in Climate Change IS pretty extreme for a conservative.

So you ride in Canberra and you haven’t heard of CanberraRIDERS? Where u been?

Glad you are ok, well relatively speaking. Those Taxi’s are scary beasts!

for the camera what about something along the lines of this pb?

Or get a pair of video specs and go for a walk. These ones have a “snapshot” mode that takes a still every 3s.

Happy to help PB!
Us motorcyclists need to stick together!!

You were rescued by the ‘canberraRiders’, and good on ’em….again

Indeed, that is what they are called. The kindness shown to me by the young lady, and her boyfriend, involved, will not go unrecognised

Pommy bastard2:09 pm 10 Jun 11

Again, I’m humbled and flattered by those who have commented, my profound thanks. My doctor advised me against continuing motorcycling with the words; “No matter how good and safe a rider you are, or think you are, there’s innumerable idiots out there who think holding a driving license grants them the ability to drive. Give it up.” I’m not doing so though, on the contrary I’m thinking of getting a bigger bike. Riding is too much fun, and stopping doing it would be an admission of, and concession to, old age.

Glad to hear you’re okay and no lasting damage was done.

Also great to hear that you were helped by a lot of people – the community hasn’t gone to the dogs yet!

You were rescued by the ‘canberraRiders’, and good on ’em….again

Good to hear you survived, you old (pommy) bastard!

More speed cameras would have prevented this crash. Oh, wait…

Good luck PB, and good to hear the best comes out of Canberrans when things go wrong.

So sorry PB – hope that your recovering well and taking the time to rest up. Whatever you do try not to get on Mrs. PB’s nerves – extended home stays and care will do that!!! (I’m speaking from experience here).

Take care – and if there is anything that we can do for you, or for Mrs. PB, to make it a bit easier, let us know.

The first thing I told my son before he went off to get his learners is “They are all out to kill you” and it looks like this one was. Heal quick

Pommy bastard1:14 pm 10 Jun 11

Thanks very much for the kind words my friends, it was a salutary reminder of mortality. There won’t be any images for a time, as I will not be able to hold a camera. But never fear, your favourite hardline fascist will be back to up hold the extremist Conservative views you all love to hate soon. My left handed typing is coming on a treat…

I had sympathy for you until that last word.

However good luck with the recovery, and a salute to the nameless folk who helped a stranger.

Ouch PB! We need our regular fix of PB photos so here’s hoping you get back on your feet soon.

Bad Luck! Hope you get better real soon. I always shed a tear for all destroyed bikes.

Some of those intersections in Woden are dark at night and I will double my paranoia on my bike as well now.

Glad to hear you’re at least still with us. I’m glad to say I had a similar experience the one time I came off my bike (albeit doing far less damage to myself than you managed). Within minutes I had passers-by heading home to get their bike trailer, people checking I was okay and generally being awesome.

When it comes down to it, there’s an awful lot of basically wonderful people in the world – it’s just easy to forget it because the d***heads are much louder.

Get well soon.
