footpath

About five months ago, Territory and Municipal Services were kind enough to come and repair the footpath out the front of our house. The contractors came at around 7am one morning in November and did a lovely job (photo number 1). They put up some nice star pickets and orange tape so no one would walk on the wet cement once they were finished. A couple of days later they returned to remove the star pickets and orange tape. However, they left the pile of rubbish (photos 2 and 3) sitting on our nature strip.

rubble more rubble

It is my understanding that all Canberran’s are responsible for the maintenance of their nature strip. Try mowing the lawn on the nature strip with two 1m x 60cm x 30 cm (Width x Depth x Height) lumps of concrete sitting in the middle of it!!

So I manage to roll the concrete onto a disused bus stop and ring TAMS, over and over and over. I even have a job reference number. Still it sits. Some idiots rolled it onto the road last weekend and a month ago I had to administer first aid to teenager who stacked his push bike on it.

And still it sits……

So Rioters, anyone have a suggestion for what I should do with these lumps of c#@p??? I can’t lift it and damned if I’m going to pay someone to come and remove it or pay to get into the tip to dump it!

Thanks John Stanhope, you’re a champion!!!

I can’t believe you posted this during the Japan earthquake crisis, when we have volunteers over there facing houses in ruins, pulling out bodies.

I know, right?! Just the other day someone on here had the bald-faced audacity to post a food review when there are over a billion people worldwide who struggle to get enough food to survive each day

Nice to meet someone who has never, ever complained about any of their first world problems…

False analogy.

Fer chrissake put the sticks under a tree, and use the same effort you’ve already used to put it all in a pile at a disused bus stop, to put it in your bin. None of those bits are too big for a wheelie bin. (Why did you put the sticks there in the first place? They weren’t left by the contractors.)

New rule. Unless you are facing nuclear holocaust you may never complain about anything in your life. Ever. For any reason.

Not everyone has a trailer. Not everyone has spare space in their garbage bin (and aren’t there penalties if you put inappropriate items in the bin?). I had my own experience of learning that some people can’t resist moving broken bits around to where they will cause the most inconvenience, when something across the road appeared in the middle of my driveway the next day.
Yes, bit of a stretch holding Stanhope personally responsible (although the people at the top always seem happy enough to take responsibility for the positive things in their purview). But it shouldn’t be Mystery2Me’s problem to solve.

i’d just move house…

I move the rest of the suburb a couple of metres to the west, and dump this crap in the newly formed gap.

Why dont you put it in the trailer and take it to the tip – it would be gone within an hour and you wouldnt have to spend days worrying about it!

We had our driveway excavated in order to repair stormwater blockages on Dec 16 2010. We could not drive a car into the driveway or walk up our front path during this time. Parking was an issue as we live in a small cul-de-sac. It was finally repaired on 16 Mar 2100. 3 months to the day. Final work was completed after Mummy rang TAMS (stormwater is their responsibility) and ACTEW (they do the actual repair work on contract for TAMS) quoted back to them their job number with a promise to call Media the following Monday. They hate news stories.

Sad yes, but that’s what happens when your government employs the lowest bidder to do the job.

If you’re seriously worried about it as a safety concern, here’s my advice:
1. Find someone of able mind and body who posesses a hammer (sledgy would be best, but even a little lump hammer would do for that) and a pair of safety glasses.
2. Negotiate for them to break the concrete up and chuck it in your rubbish bin for the princely sum of a cheap bottle of plonk or a sixpack of choice.
3. Call TAMS and ask them to close out your complaint with the words “I did it myself you pack of useless bastards”
4. Move on with your life secure in the knowledge that pesky lump of concrete will bother the neighbourhood no longer, thanks to your pro-active can-do attitude.

But is it art?

The exact same thing happened to my footpath out front. You pay rates, that amount would easily fit into your green bin!

Tell another party, tell the Canberra Times or Chronicle, or post on RiotAct. I bet that will get it fixed. Bad publicity gets a politician’s ear like nothing else!

I’m no fan of Stan, but I think holding him personally responsible for this is probably drawing a rather long bow.
