Tharwa Bridge re-opens

Tharwa Drive might be bidding for the title of most murderous road in the ACT. But at least it goes somewhere now with the bridge to Tharwa re-opening.

The de facto mayor of Tharwa, and CAP candidate for the upcoming election, Val Jeffery, has signaled his pleasure at this development.

But that hasn’t stopped him having a spray about the process:

“We’re all utterly disgusted that it has taken three years of mismanagement and lies to get to this stage.”

“After three years waiting, it has taken only five months to get the work done and this could have, and should have, happened three years ago,” Mr Jeffery said.

“While the government has delayed, two lives have been lost and there have been multiple serious injuries on the mongrel dangerous detour needlessly imposed on the community.”

Oh, and since we’ve wandered way off topic here, can I drag it back to something that’s on another topic which has passed the limit whereby IE users can’t post anymore.

Farking non-indicating is definitely* a Sydney disease just as much if not more than Canberra. Started before I got to Campbelltown and was rife out to Parramatta and in to Balmain through peak hour traffic. My statistical analysis shows the worst offenders for a combination of speeding and non-indicating are trades vehicles. My full report will be in the next ‘Traffic Pedantry Monthly’ complete with pie charts and pivot tables.

* That’s how you spell it kiddies — no ‘a’ in ‘definitely’.

And yes, I’ve been up close and personal with the Mississipi (sp?) and wouldn’t touch it with one of those ten foot barge poles we always seemed to have lying around the house when I was younger. Can’t think why I took it to the states on my honeymoon.

(*Steps away from further references about barge poles and honeymoons…*)

In the film, the something that was thrown was the protagonist’s (“singer’s”) doll, from memory. And Billy Joe was engaged in…. oh, someone’s covered that bit already in this thread … hence his throwing himself into the river.

For anyone who’s interested, this podcast http://www.lyricsundercover.com/?p=16 analyses the lyrics of the song, and throws up a few alternatives as to why Billie Joe jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge.

I thought he was thrown, not jumped. I am certain that the lyrics say something about “was seen throwing something off the Tallahassee bridge”

but then, it was a long time ago when i heard it.

Just as long as they didn’t come to a bad end.

; )

There are all sorts of websites that reckon Tom was sleeping with three different cousins and he killed Laura ’cause he reckoned she gave him syphilis and maybe one of the cousins helped him.

… gosh, I wonder if it was based on a true story like Tom Dooley. Hate to think about it being a baby though.

I can’t believe we are talking about Billie Joe … *chuckle* … but my curiosity has gotten the better of me.

Granny, Billie-Joe was gay. (Not a nice proposition in 1950’s Mississippi.)

It is open, but the heavy vehical detour signs remain. Photos at http://www.smtihsroad.com

i can agree with the “mongrel dangerous detour” part..i went there yesterday, and im amazed to say, i survived to tell the tale??

I saw it, but I have forgotten why he jumped.

: P

Is it just steel or does it have the wooden bits?

Did you ever see the film? I saw it in high school and it was a bit of an eye-opener for a young bloke about what drove Billy Joe to jump off the bridge (at least in the director’s or screenplay writer’s/writers’ eyes).

Er, back on topic. Tharwa Bridge. Yeah, I heard it’s open. Drove over it once, maybe twice.

I think it’s time for Thumper to spend time in the Offal Thread. (and Overheard too, for quoting crummy old yank songs. Both of you).

It is open – I drove over it this morning at 10:30am

Groan! Pass the biscuits, please.

Hopefully nobody jumped from it ….

I have been told that the bridge is NOT open tonight (Thursday). Anyone know why? Or when it will be open.

I’m sure the people of Tharwa must be overly pleased.

I will be taking a celebratory lap on my bike from Banks to Tharwa, up to Cotter and back down to Lanyon through Canberra Suburbs on Sunday to give the Bridge a go!

Not enough politicians use words like “mongrel” these days. I hope he makes it into the Local Council to add a bit of colour.
