Civic Square will be transformed into a disco and feature ABBA tribute band, BABBA, as part of Canberra’s New Year’s Eve celebrations Stanhope announced on Thursday.

Local acts Funk Shui, Red Hill, and Crisp will also feature.

Garema Place will have the Bass in the Place Dance Party.

“This is a safe, alcohol-free event featuring some of Canberra’s best DJs,” Stanhope said.

There is also planning underway for fireworks over city hill at 9pm and midnight.

Personally, I prefer the bands, fireworks and celebrations around the lake but in terms of safety and anti-social behaviour that’s probably a lot more difficult to police.

Took the snotters to last year’s event in Civic, and it was good family fun. Reasonable cover bands, plenty of street stalls and an OK fireworks display.

Having it in town created a tremendous vibe and there were a shitload of people there. Sadly the event was spoiled (for me anyway!) by having ‘our’ Hayley from Idol show up. It may have been the actual last minute of her allotted 15 mins of fame!

Looking forward to this year’s event.
