The 2009 Santa Claus Bar Crawl

RiotACT Santas

In some ways the Santa Crawl Bar Crawl is like every other day of my life.

Drink, laugh, be foolish, chatter to pretty women who are scantily clad. It’s all no doubt leading to a sad and lonely grave but it feels like a good idea at the time.

So while it’s in full swing the crawl is basic good fun.

But it does have a tendency to the exceptional.

For without it why else would I have call to walk through a children’s playground swigging a beer dressed as Santa with a mob of parents swearing at me?

And then there is the moment when, having walked into town dressed as Santa, one sees another Santa and can finally be sure that this really is the right date and it isn’t all a horrendously embarrassing cockup.

So last night was 2009’s outing for one of Canberra’s weirdest and most lovable institutions.

The ladies quite possibly out-numbered the men and I only lasted for PJs, ICBM (cunningly diverting the Santa’s upstairs to check out their new really quite fabulous beer garden cum tiki bar), and Mooseheads.

Which are three bars I would rarely darken the doors of unless dressed as Santa.

There’s a slideshow below, and a special shout-out goes to the pictured table of RiotACT readers whom I really should have spent more time talking to (especially the blonde on the left who I could easily have developed a crush on).

Second Friday in December, mark it in your calendars if you’ve never been.

Best night out of the year. Sorry I missed you JB!

BigDave,

Not sure if it was the same bunch but there were a few santas in academy in the wee hours who decided to fight some other blokes for no reason.

A friend and I joined a friend of hers in the SCPC a few times in the past and I met with other friends once there unbeknown to me and we would spend (looking rather unchristmassy) much of the night with them and we always had a gr8 time. Sad to hear they’re getting a bit heavy on the group/fancy dress it was always really innocent, what exactly is the problem?

Does anyone else think this years SC-PC was a bit lacking from previous years? Where was Mr C with her whistle when it was time to move on? Still, Caveman Santa and a few other regulars were there as always, though his game appears to be slipping with the years! And yes, the girls made Christmas look fantastic. Sigh…

We got out of ICBM as quickly as possible (over priced and cr8p selection) and headed to North. Where we were told, after being well received in previous years and often not getting any further, that there was no fancy dress allowed after 9.30pm. WTF?

Mooseheads was skipped (not even the SC-PC makes that experience bearable) and further beverages were had at O’Malleys and The Phoenix. *hic*

Fell back in the door and to bed at some tie between sun down and sun up… 🙂

I might need a sign next year to explain that yes, I was a Christmas Tree 😛

Wish I’d heard about this one sooner!

I think it would have been great if there was a mass brawl between all the Santas (or is it Santi?) at the end of the night.
