So how does your suburb stack up for crime?

With Crime Statistics now online I’ve taken the very crude measure of ranking police patrol sectors by the total crimes committed per 1000 people in March. Interestingly nicer areas seem to have more crime. Do they have more to steal? Or are they more likely to report?

    155.3 Fyshwick, Oaks Estate
    119.0 City
    67.1 Woden town centre
    56.5 Tuggeranong Town Centre
    41.6 Belconnen town centre
    17.1 Braddon, Reid
    12.3 Acton, Turner
    11.0 Ainslie, Dickson
10.8 Barton, Capital Hill, Deakin, Forrest, Griffith, Kingston, Parkes, Yarralumla
    9.2 Chisholm, Gilmore, Richardson
    9.0 Lyneham, O’Connor
    8.8 Gungahlin town centre
    8.6 Fadden, Gowrie, Hume, Macarthur
    7.8 Monash, Oxley, Wanniassa
7.8 Harman, Narrabundah, Red Hill, Symonston
    6.9 Bonner, Ford
    6.7 Franklin, Harrison, Kenny, Mitchell
    6.7 Aranda, Bruce, Cook, Macquarie
6.4 Curtin, Garran, Hughes, Lyons, O’Malley, Weston
    6.0 Nicholls
6.0 Chapman, Duffy, Fisher, Holder, Rivett, Stirling, Waramanga
5.5 Chifley, Farrer, Isaacs, Mawson, Pearce, Torrens
    5.5 Downer, Hackett, Watson
    5.5 Kambah
    5.2 Evatt, Florey, Melba, Spence
4.9 Campbell, Canberra Airport, Duntroon, Pialligo, Russell
    4.8 Higgins, Holt, Latham, Macgregor
    4.7 Banks, Conder, Gordon, Tharwa
    4.6 Charnwood, Dunlop, Flynn, Fraser
4.3 Bonython, Calwell, Isabella Plains, Theodore
    3.9 Giralang, Kaleen, Lawson, McKellar
    3.8 Hall, Ngunnawal
    3.7 Hawker, Page, Scullin, Weetangera
    3.3 Palmerston
    3.2 Amaroo

But we work with what we have

You didn’t expect them to publish meaningful numbers that could be used to actually measure their performance, did you?

If you want to make something meaningful out of these figures then start tracking the trends, that’ll tell you how well the AFP are performing.

You seem to have conveniently forgotten about the annual report which is made public, the same report used to report ACT Policing performance to the ACT Government. Oh, but wait (pulls on tin foil hat) it’s all a conspiracy so the AFP can lie about performance …… Mwah hahahahahahahaha !!!!!

Monash isn’t on the list?

Should be:

7.8 Monash, Oxley, Wanniassa

Nicer areas have more crime? like the civic which is full of beggars and drunkards? or woden town center which is full of young good-for-nothings who have nothing better to do than “hang” around looking for a fight.

Looking at the map of the zones in Tuggeranong, it appears that Kambah is a patrol area of it’s own simply due to it’s size

Nice to see the Chisholm / Richo scum are just as active in their own ‘communities’ as they are when they come to visit Fadden, Gowrie and Macarthur.

The problem with most crime statistic’s is that it’s a very difficult thing to measure accurately…

If you lived in a place where assults where a daily occurance, and you where assulted say once every three months, how long would it be before you stopped calling the police and simply took matters into your own hands? Likewise with break and enters. (This is assuming your financial situation doesn’t allow you to move away)

Furthermore in those sorts of places, insurance is probably not a good measure either. I had a mate who’s place was broken into on average every couple of weeks. They didn’t bother with insurance as no insurance co would touch them, not much point calling the cops, as the cops would take a statement and that would be the end of that. So his solution, don’t have nice things worthy of steeling.

So to look at crime rates there based on insurance or police reports, it would show a lower crime rate than was actually happening in the area.

Nicer areas? Take out the town centres & the first 5 suburbs listed are Braddon, Reid, Acton, Turner & Ainslie. Pretty much exactly what I’d expect to see. All suburbs with a high proportion of scum.

And a high proportion of young people with nice new modern stuff whose security is limited by the fact that they’re renting or dealing with a body corporate. Easy targets who are often victim to criminal gangs that sweep through “secure” carparks either stealing cars or breaking windows to steal expensive goodies such as GPS units and phone accessories.

Queanbeyan – zero. God’s country…

Last time I checked, Queanbeyan was not in the ACT.

I think this is a well known correlation… nice (read expensive) areas tend to be the ones closer in to city centres. City centres tend to be a focal point for crimes due to high population density, and this spills out a bit into surrounding suburbs.

there are certainly oddities, and the town centres are obvious exceptions.

But we work with what we have, and there are some interesting nuggets in there. Gungahlin Town Centre for instance appears to have tumbleweeds rolling through.

“very crude measure”

Certainly is a crude measure. The top five places are suburbs with the lowest population densities so will rank highly even if the number of crimes is low.

The use of police patrol areas to group is also meaningless as it is based on arbitrary geographic areas that don’t take into account the size of the area or the demographics of its population.

According to your table Kambah appears as a reasonably safe suburb but it is assigned a patrol area all of its own. Fadden, Gowrie, Hume, Macarthur ranks relatively high compared to the rest of Tuggeranong but it includes Hume which has a low population.
