The AFP and Mark Standen

Last Night’s Four Corners was must see viewing for anyone who thinks about how to watch the watchmen.

It’s about how the head of the NSW Crime Commission was trying to import massive amounts of chemicals into Australia for the production of amphetamines.

The AFP do not come out of it smelling entirely of roses with at least two current and former officers caught up in the criminality.

On the other hand they did manage to investigate, arrest, and eventually prosecute their former colleague without him getting a tipoff.

Of course it is about image. That is why I can’t understand the fuss over an importation relative to the Dr Haneef cluster f$#k. They couldn’t do worse.

Perhaps Dr Haneef was expendable, whereas Standen was in the club?

Having had some professional contact with AFP in my experience their institutional priorities are:

1.Protecting their image
2.Protecting their image
3.Protecting their image
4.Fighting crime

As for the Standen case they were handed it on a silver platter by the Dutch.

Of course they’re about protecting image first and foremost. Duh, born out of Compol, Customs Narcotic Bureau and Canberra Police…? The only thing I’m not surprised is I haven’t had any of the usual suspects of AF (?) on here calling me names…

The “head of the NSW Crime Commission”? Assistant Director, Investigations, was what I thought.

Shame they don’t mention he was an ex-Narc (ACS)…one of the very few who were not considered (ahem) corrupt. Hence his involvement with the AFP from its conception. Nor do they mention that he was the Chief Investigator for the NCA….A/director Investigations is like being the Dep Sec or once removed.

The “head of the NSW Crime Commission”? Assistant Director, Investigations, was what I thought.

While I don’t know much about the inner workings of the AFP, I have to say that it is a great catch! This wasn’t a guy taking the odd coffee or donut for free – this was a major importation of some serious drugs.

My guess is that he is now ‘rolling over’ in order to get a sentence reduction. He, like many others, will be spiving his little heart out, just as the other offenders wife (ex-AFP I read) is also doing. Obviously the criminal code of silence didn’t quite make it to the doors of the academy.

But to those AFP and other Police who aren’t like Standen, let me be the first to thank you for what you do and the honour in which you do it.

Though it is coming from a reasonably astute source. This is still hear say and speculative. Being an AFP officer doesn’t mean forfeiting rights to fair assessment of character or basic fair go approach. If that program went through every department in the APS, they would have enough dirt and then content to program a decade of television. Wouldn’t that be a treat. The AFP smells enough already because we love seeing people look stupid and never hesitate to pass on things like suspected but not proven corruption. Its lazy. Remember haneef? That is about as bad as it could get for an organization in need of cred. And no one has mentioned that for years. So there are a few bent cops. Wow.

I’m by no measure an expert, but wouldn’t they mix it with other stuff?

A gram of meth at end-dealer purity is still worth more than that (so I’ve heard…)
Pure meth would set a buyer back a lot more.

Because JB, most of his former colleagues have left the job….and Standen left the AFP in the early 1990’s (93 I think), so most of the serving Federal Agents never knew him. I also suspect the arresting agents were from Canberra or one of the other regions. I hope those serving members who have been adversely named are constantly looking behind them.

With any luck Standen will rot in gaol.

I love a good Royal Commission into Federal Police Corruption.

Also, converting 300kg of pseudoephedrine into $60mil implies a final street price of $217-260/gram.
What have those police mathemagicians been smoking to arrive at that figure?.

Another pig looking bewildered when a spotlight was shone on him while his snout was in the trough.

How many decades and how many secret videos will it take for our police to realise they are not above suspicion or above the law. Great work by the AFP to catch this pig and his bumbling minion.

Mark Standen should have watched more of Underbelly to pick up tips on how not to get caught.
