alinga st overpass

Easily one of the least used pieces of infrastructure in Civic is the Alinga St overpass which does at least allow ACT Health staff to drink at the Wig and Pen without having to cross any roads.

But at the moment it’s all wrapped up like a present.

And it’s kind of pretty this way.

someone was telling me when i was aleing at the W&P the other week that this refurb was about to occur – at the cost of something obscene in the hundreds of thousands. don’t know if the figure is true but if it is – beggars belief given i have never seen anyone walk across it.

How about kissing on it ?

It used to be a good spot to take photos of Black Mountain, but now there’s a building in the way.

I remember when they had a street parade going through the city back in the late 80s – early 90s. Can’t remember if it was for christmas or what, but one float came up to that overpass a little too tall, bringing whole parade to a stop.

Someone had to climb the float structure and break off the part that was too tall to continue.

Someone might recall what the parade was about, cause I remember someone handing me an unopened condom, even though I was about 7 y/o at the time.

That was the old Canberra Mardi Gras parade. It used to be part of the Canberra festival and was one of the biggest events on the Canberra calendar.

I too got my first condom as a 10 year old from there, much to my Mother’s dislike 🙂

Now that it has all those shiny buildings behind it I’m glad they decided to modernise its exterior, that drab concrete was looking very Soviet!

At least it was unopened.

Refurbishing it.. Why they would bother is beyond me.

Asbestos?

Looks nice and all, but royally screws with sight lines for motorists, esp those trying to cross Alinga St.

Very Christo.

I remember when I was a little kid they used to put some kind of seasonal display on the bridge with big wooden painted animals all over it. If I remember correctly it was made up to be a train with all the animals looking out the windows.

It was definitely exciting as a kid.
