The Amazing Auto-Fellating Canberra Liberals

The Canberra Liberals have posted a peculiar media release congratulating themselves on the forward looking nature of re-electing their president of the last 5 years (assuming for a moment a term is a year?), Gary Kent.

And haven’t they just been golden years chock full of success?

I was particularly impressed (horrified?) with these thoughts from the party president:

Mrs McDiven, who was elected in June as the first ever female national president of the Liberal Party, told the meeting that there were three essential pillars of a strong and effective Liberal Party:

* parliamentary representatives able to demonstrate effectively their policy convictions and accurately represent community values;

* top quality organisational staff who are the best at what they do;

* a strong network of volunteers to provide day to day support to the party and to spread the Liberal message across the nation.

No actual beliefs of their own then? Things are going to get grim if they ever get thrown out of The Lodge.

Ah, essential pillars. Just can’t do without them can you? Although some disreputable types would even graffiti essential pillars with their ‘tags’ while playing their ‘hip-hop’ and wearing their ‘hoodies’ and so on…Hoodlums.

Do we have to rip on hip-hop now too? What about (some) hip-hop’s relation to street poetry? There’s a lot of innovation going on underground.

Um, I wasn’t criticising hip-hop. I was, in fact, laughing at those who use cliche (like essential pillars) without any thought. Shame I didn’t work the word ‘boom-box’ in there…The inverted commas are sometimes a clue as to how to read a comment, I find.

But back on topic, Canberra Liberals will have to become a lot more small-l if they want to succeed in Canberra. At the moment I can only name one of their candidates who meets this description.

Seven years old and it could have been written yesterday. (Except for who is in the Lodge, of course. For the moment, anyway.)

Fun thread. Thanks for the massive spade work, CSRI.

Zombie thread and all, but this was a top prediction 🙂

Now, now Colsim….still smarting from the smacking you got re Standope and the Catholic church?

We all know how reliable polls are. Just like the one’s that predicted Latham as victor last time at the Federal level. The IR changes, like the fury that supposedly would have gotten rid of the GST, will be forgotten next time an election rolls around. Especially since the increasingly irrelevant union movement can think of nothing more constructive that having a rally and a fat, bearded man chants ‘Howard is an asshole’. Mind bogglingly imaginative

Young Lib? Sorry again, too old for that game. Not a member of any party. My vote goes to who I think is best at the time and is not party preferred.

Seems like every time you pop your smart head up it gets smacked down again

Ooh, a new young lib playa on this board, great.
(what’s the emoticon for vomiting?)

Would that silent majority supporting IR change be the same one that would’ve elected a Beazley gov’t with an 8% swing on the weekend? (And that’s a Beazley gov’t for God’s sake)

CT you’re right (sadly), IR in two years I doubt many will care.

My complaint is a party whose president lists its “essential pillars” as ways to retain power.

You haven’t addressed that, nor have you come to your dishonesty in saying I had taken her statement out of context when I did no such thing,

Another 4 year term…..they have already.

Lets just say that the silent majority of this nation support IR reform and strenghtned CT laws and leave it at that eh?

Sorry, I forgot to add ‘grow up a bit’ to the argument

Dont expect them to trot out their beliefs in every press statement for your benefit.

No, not every time. Just when outlying their essential pillars perhaps?

Such an attractive “Born To Rule” attitude you’re espousing.

Such a delightfull way with those you should be convincing of the merits of your argument.

You’ll go far.

“The people of Australia will at some point hold their nose and vote for a catastrophic labor party over a grotesque liberal party.”

They have had their chance at the last 2 Federal elections, with Latham the potential catastrophe at the last….they got smashed last time I checked.

If you want to see what the Libs stand for read their websites. Dont expect them to trot out their beliefs in every press statement for your benefit.

Its not arrogant complacency. If the Labor party wants to get elected come out with policy, dont just disagree with the other team…DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL.

Suffice to say you need to do a little more study into what principled conservatism means

I quoted her in full and provided a hyperlink to the source document.

What more context would you like?

We’re still waiting for word (either from you or the Canberra Liberal congratulatory piece) on what the Liberals stand for other than hanging on to power and a bit of graft and corruption on the side.

Certainly the Canberra Liberals rarely seem to exhibit in their statements any of the properties of principled conservatism, or liberalism.

The Libs will remain in the Lodge until Labor comes up with something viable, other than rhetoric and abject stupidity….and gets a front bench of adults

Sadly that kind of arrogant complacency is what saw the whitlam government into power to this nation’s great loss.

The people of Australia will at some point hold their nose and vote for a catastrophic labor party over a grotesque liberal party.

I would prefer both sides put up a better showing rather than relying on a lack of alternatives.

Chrucchill’s been quoted a lot this week but I believe he once said “The lesser of two evils is still evil”

or Kiribilli as the case may be…

You may do well to put the whole report in context, rather than selectively take pieces out to suit yourself.

Here is another snippet
“She told the meeting that while the Party was travelling extremely well Federally, it needed to work hard to increase its parliamentary representation at State and Territory level.”

Nothing more than a pep talk for the faithful. McNiven is the National, not ACT party prez, so her remarks were directed federally. The Libs have plenty of their own beliefs, you would need to be living under a rock not to know that.
