more public art

Braddonboy has spotted this one on Alexandrina Drive (New the Yacht Club), there’s no information on site, but he reports it’s 24 cubes of rusty steel with the obligatory piece of shiny.

And what if the people in govie housing are too old to do their own maintenance or are disabled or have mental health issues?

do you really think this artwork would cost enough to pay for a house?

if people in govvie houses did a bit of their own maintenance we’d save enough to buy heaps more art.

How about a few homes for the homeless, and more money put into nursing homes.

@Fancios

so they publicly support it, but privately bag it…how are they different from everyone else?

I can’t help but think it would look better if it wasnt there at all. I know the whole debate about public art and costs is one that keeps going on in Canberra and on this site.

I would add to it, however, by saying that many in the arts community in Canberra, and people I know who are well versed in classics and fine arts regard this stuff generally as rubbish. Publicly, however, they feel obliged to support it, in the vain hope that eventually the funding will trickle down to more meaningful art.

And I do use the term ‘meaningful’ intentionally. Canberra completely disregards many other artistic disciplines and focusses largely on the ‘tangible’ and highly visible sculpture and installation art, presumably to pad Stanhope’s ego and make him look like a patron of the arts.

No doubt addding to the cult of personality he’s trying to build to leverage into that sweet vice-chancellorship at the ANU.

I can’t help but think it would look better if the shiny bit wasn’t there.

Ew… Horrible but par for the course in Canberra.

Love hearing the pollies whinge about budget shortfalls, yet the crap keeps rising out of the ground.

I love it!
