Chief Minister Stanhope has announced that he’s stumping up $1 million for a feasability study of the Acton lake shore hosting “The Australia Forum” a planned convention centre megaplex.

Mr Stanhope said the ACT Government would allocate funding in next month’s budget to explore the feasibility of the project as part of a possible West Basin development precinct.

“Our studies will explore the suitability of the West Basin area for development and how the Australia Forum might fit into this precinct,” Mr Stanhope said. “This will ensure the Australia Forum concept is progressed, putting it in such a position that when the Federal Budget has returned to surplus it can be considered for Commonwealth investment.”

This morning’s scoping study was paid for by $250,000 each from the Canberra Business Council and the ACT Government.

Oh for god’s sake. This is OUR bloody lake,

Ah, no it’s not, it’s the commonwealth government’s lake, therefore you have no more claim over it than mrs smith of ceduna

I just posted a response to the Australia Forum over here – http://the-riotact.com/the-australia-forum-to-glitter-upon-the-lake/42683#comment-320229

Not really sure why RiotACT has had such an alarmist reactive response to this project…

…Anyway, far from being a “shady scheme”, work on this has been going on for a decade, driven by interested and passionate people with a vision, giving up their time and offering their professional expertise pro bono. You do yourself a disservice by spouting ignorant nonsense.

The bike path is in the plan – in fact if you open the link to the scoping study, you’ll see it for yourself.

This thing won’t go ahead without Federal government money, which they have been unwilling to part with for Canberra projects in recent years, so it won’t go ahead without significant support from the community, business and the Australian people… the Feds won’t even fund the Canberra Centenary celebrations, so we’ll be lucky….

There goes the bike path.

Clearly Stanhope’s learnt nothing from the recent experience of NSW Labor.

$250K of our money eagerly trousered no doubt by spivs in sharp suits and point-toed shoes for producing a glossy wankfest that recommends giving the lake to the mates of the spivs.

Charming.

I would say “Bring on the election so we can get rid of this miserable government”, but then I look at the alternative, which I think may well be worse, and I start wondering whether it’s worth making the effort to get out of bed everyday.

Told ya……..

Shouldn’t the Real Estate Institute or the Business Council be funding this? WTF is Stanhope doing giving OUR money to promote these bastards’ shady schemes?

Oh for god’s sake. This is OUR bloody lake, not some government asset to flog off. Let this forum mob go dig a big fat hole and make their own lake. Crackenback Resort in the snowies made their own Water Views (well, the Japanese retirement funds and Kuchigumi-gai or whoever it was). You can just see the white shoe spivs dazzling Stanhope and his fellow hicks with all the Profit to be made from Development on the Undeveloped Asset that is the lake foreshores.
